Opened at Raffles City on 29 Novemeber 2012, Osaka Ohsho which translates to 'The King of Gyoza in Osaka' is Japan Foods Holding latest franchise in Singapore. Established in 1969 as a gyoza specialist, Osaka Ohsho is a household name in Japan synonymous with top notch gyoza and Chuka cuisine. The word chuka means Chinese in Japan. As of today, Osaka Ohsho has over 300 outlets in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea and now Singapore.

Ban Ban Chicken 4/5

An unique variations of Chinese favourite drunken chicken, Ban Ban Chicken ($5.90) is a cold appetiser of thinly sliced steamed chicken drizzled with homemade goma (sesame) sauce. The sesame sauce complemented the steamed chicken, a light but yet flavourful appetiser stimulating the appetite.

IMG_8918ed
Fuwatoro Tenshin Han 4/5

Served in a bowl of velvety gravy, the fluffy omelette upon slicing into, revealed steaming Japanese rice. The Fuwatoro Tenshin Han ($9.90) used Koshihikari rice from Toyoma region in Japan. The rice is grown with melted snow and fertile soil. It is extremely rich in flavour and its texture is a balance of sticky and fluffy.

IMG_8921ed
Fried Chicken with Negi Sauce 4/5

The Fried Chicken with Negi Sauce ($5.90) coated with a light spring onion sauce was fried to a golden brown crisp, tender and juicy inside.

IMG_8920ed
Black Vinegar Fried Chicken Set 4/5

The ala carte items in the menu also are available in sets. I had the Black Vinegar Fried Chicken Set ($15.90) which comes with the main, 3 pieces of gyoza, a bowl of soup and rice. Stir fried with lotus roots, capsicum and eggplant in Japanese black vinegar sauce, the chicken was tender and flavourful.

IMG_8917ed
Gyoza 4.2/5

The star definitely is the Gyoza ($3.90 for 6pc, $7.80 for 12pc) at Osaka Ohsho. The gyoza is pan fried to a deliciously crisp on one side yet tantalisingly moist within. The nice balanced filling is made with a combination of tender pork shoulder and leg cuts as well as cabbage, garlic and ginger. The skin freshly made daily with Japanese flour was also delicately thinner than others I have tried.

Albert Street Prawn Noodle @ Lavender Food Square

Another popular stall at Lavendar Food Square is probably Albert Street Prawn Noodle. Besides the normal dry and soup prawn noodles, the stall also sells pigtails and pork ribs prawn noodles. There is another stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre and word is that this is opened by the current boss's relative.

IMG_6145
Prawn Noodle Soup 4/5

The Prawn Noodle Soup ($5) was served in a claypot with 2 big prawns sliced into half. The prawns were fresh and crunchy. The soup was slurping good, robust and flavourful.

IMG_6114
Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle Dry 4/5

If you order the dry version, the noodle and ingredients will be served separately. I tried the Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle Dry ($5). I preferred the dry version to the soup version because of the chilli sauce for the noodles.  In addition, the noodle will be soaky pretty fast in the soup.

Poulet @ Great World City

IMG_8930ed

After my previous visit to Poulet at Bugis+ in September 2012, I am back at Poulet again but at their second outlet at Great World City opened in November 2012. Similar to the flagship outlet, the second outlet features a 62 seater open dining area modernly furnished with an open kitchen. In my previous visit, there were some hits and misses. The invite was timely to check out the kitchen's consistency and quality.

IMG_8927ed
Country Side Mushroom Soup 4.2/5

Usually mushroom soup comes in the form of either creamy or puree base. At Poulet, the Country Side Mushroom Soup ($5.80) has both in one. The mushroom soup was smooth and creamy. Each mouthful also came with finely puree mushroom bites.

IMG_8929ed
French Onion Soup 4.2/5

When I visited Poulet at Bugis+ previously, the French Onion Soup ($5.80) did not meet my expectation. This time round, the soup tasted much better. The tangy flavour was nicely balanced with the sweetness of the caramelised French onion in the veal stock.

IMG_8932ed
Escargot de Bourgogne 3.8/5

The Escargot de Bourgogne ($8.80) which I did not try in my previous visit had half dozen Burgundy Snails served with tomato fondue and almond garlic butter. Chef Nelson ordered some bread and taught me how to enjoy this dish to the fullest, wiping the bread with the remaining tomato fondue and almond garlic butter. Learnt something new from Chef Nelson.

IMG_8941ed
Poulet de Cranberry 4.5/5

Along with the opening of Great World City outlet, Poulet has also launched a new Signature with a refreshing twist to the house highly raved Rotisserie Chicken. Poulet de Cranberry ($15.80 half / $28.80 whole) is served in a fresh luscious cranberry sauce and double pommery & dijon mustard. I have some bad experience with the chicken in my previous visit but this time it was cooked perfectly. To enjoy the dish, mixed the cranberry and mustard sauces togther. The savory and fruity sauce complemented the tender chicken very well.

IMG_8935ed
Oxtail de Bourguignon 4/5

Pressure cooked oxtail in red wine sauce with carrot and onion, the Oxtail de Bourguignon ($15.80) was tender, falling off the bone with ease.

IMG_8943ed
Profiteroles 4.2/5

The Profiteroles ($7.80) at Poulet was as good as the one I had at Le Bistrot du Sommelier and it is only half the price of it. The Choux puffs with 2 huge scoops of vanilla ice cream, warm chocolate sauce and almond flakes is a must try.

IMG_8946ed
Tiramisu 4.2/5

The Tiramisu ($7.80) served in a jar was still as good. The tiramise was mosit with mascarpone cheese, sponge finger soaked in espresso and rum syrup

With its modern alfresco setting, dining at Poulet is casual, unpretentious and comforting. Although it is French food at affordable price, quality was not compromise.

Rubato Modern Italian Trattoria @ Clover Way

IMG_9144ed

Rubato Modern Italian Trattoria is hidden in the midst of industrial buildings at Jalan Pemimpin. Tucked among the shophouses at Clover Park neighbourhood, I am surprised to discover a hidden gem. During my visit, I noticed the secret Italian restaurant already has repeated regulars. The restaurant is also favourite for local celebrities looking for a place to host private functions. I am privileged to be invited by the restaurant to try out their 4 course festive dinner menu available till end of December 2012.

IMG_9140ed

Stepping into the back of Rubato, the restaurant's al fresco dining area transformed one into the street of Italy with black street lamps along the courtyards.

IMG_9161ed

Chef/Owner Marcus Edwin Wu is very passionate in his food. He is probably one of the youngest chef in Singapore cooking traditioanl Italian food. In between dinner servicing, I noticed him taking time to step out of the kitchen to mingle with his customers, sharing his latest food adventures. Chef Marcus is also a trained violinist under the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) concert master Alexander Souptel. The multi talented chef even has a scholarship to study law in Australia. That is when he was plugged into food culture in Australia and working as a sous chef in an Italian restaurant.

IMG_9148ed
Burratina Con Pomodorini E Basilico 4.2/5

The 4 course dinner started with freshly imported burratina from Puglia, roma tomato, organic basil and artisanal-grade parma ham. The creamy buttery burratina paired with sweet roma tomato and salty parma ham were nicely balanced without snatching the limelight from one another.

IMG_9150ed
Aragosta Cappuccino 4.5/5

For soup, I had the lobster cappuccino with asparagus silvers, truffle oil and pizzetta. The lobster reduction simply blown me away with its intense and robust flavours.

IMG_9152ed
Veal Ravioli with Truffle Porcini Sauce 4.8/5

The star of the night definitely is the Veal Ravioli with Truffle Porcini sauce which brought fame to the restaurant. According to Chef/Owner Marcus Edwin Wu, the dish was inspired by Joel Robuchon's Foie Gras Ravioli and he created a variation of it. The handmade veal ravioli was cooked to perfection still having a bite to the pasta dough. The deft piece of work with the flavourful truffle porcini sauce was like a match from heaven.

IMG_9156ed
Torta Di Cioccolato Fondente 4.2/5

Finishing the 4 course dinner on a perfect note with the valrhona bittersweet chocolate fondant with home-made vanilla gelato. The chocolate fondant was rich and moist which hit the right note for the perfect ending.

I have enjoyed my dinner at Rubato. Besides the quality food, the ambience is relax and casual. The restaurant also has a good selection of boutique vineyard wines that is personally selected by chef Marcus in his travels. I am already looking forward to my next visit

Sushi Tei @ Takashimaya

IMG_8954ed

Whenever I am craving for Japanese cuisine but tight in my wallet, I will always thought of Sushi Tei for a good deal of sushi. With 15 outlets island wide, I can easily satisfy my craving easily. For a limited period until 9 January 2013, Sushi Tei has rolled out a new promotional menu, The Perfect Interfusion. Centred around the autumn and winter seasons, it is a menu of warm and hearty rustic fare with a contemporary twist.

IMG_8949ed
Mentai Potato Salad 4/5

Potato Salad is quite common but just a little twist with mixing it with chunky carrots, cucumbers and topped with mentai gave the Mentai Potato Salad ($6.80) a whole new dimension in enjoying the dish.

IMG_8951ed
Spicy Ban Ban ji Ramen 4.2/5

At Sushi Tei, you can also find dishes created by their talented chefs from various outlets. The top six new creations in the Supreme Chef Challenge Creations will be available in the menu. If it received good responses, they will be featured permanently in the menu.

One of such creations is the cold noodle dish, the Spicy Ban Ban ji Ramen ($10) created by I12 Katong outlet. The Ban Ban ji Ramen was packed with beautiful flavours. The noodle was firm and springy. The aromatic sesame sauce with a hint of spiciness was the star that brings the whole dish together.

IMG_8953ed
Yakiniku Cheese Roll 4/5

Another creation by the talented chef at Holland Village outlet is the Yakiniku Cheese Roll ($12). With the beef slice and cheddar wrapped around the sushi rice, seaweed and cucumber, it tasted like a re-interpretation of the cheeseburger.

IMG_8956ed
Tori Nanban 4/5

Paired with the homemade Taru Taru sauce of mayonnaise, shallots and parsley, the Tori Nanban ($10) was crisp on the exterior and juicy inside.

IMG_8960ed
Ikameishi 3.8/5

The Ikameishi ($12) which is char grilled squid stuffed with flavoured squid rice came with firm and nice crunchy texture. The lightly flavoured squid rice filling was a welcome addition complementing the fresh Hokkaido squid.

IMG_8966ed
Mango Avocado Roll 4/5

The fruity and refreshing Mango Avocado Roll ($12) for me resembles the Thai dessert mango glutinous rice. A sushi roll of mango, crab stick, avocado and wafu dressing is an interesting  change to the tradition.

IMG_8967ed
Ikasumi Pasta 3/5

The Ikasumi Pasta ($13.50) tossed in a luscious squid ink sauce and topped with fried garlic and squid was not memorable for me. If not for the fried garlic aroma that came with each mouthful of the al dente spaghetti, the whole dish was lacking in flavour and tasted rather bland.

IMG_8970ed
Matsutake Sukiyaki (beef) 4/5

Simmer the thinly sliced meats and Matsutake mushrooms in the comforting melange of shiratake glass noodles, tofu, leeks, carrots and enoki mushrooms in sukiyaki soup. The Matsutake Sukiyaki ($26 beef, $22 chicken) features the seasonal Matsutake pine mushrooms combines with a choice of chicken or USDA beef tenderloin is a must try.

IMG_8979ed
Nama Chocolate and Matcha Nama Chocolate Ice Cream 4.5/5

I have never given a thought to the dessert at Sushi Tei but after trying the Nama Chocolate Ice Cream ($4.80) and Matcha Nama Chocolate Ice Cream ($4.80) this will be my must order dessert in my future visits to Sushi Tei. The bite size ice cream filled the mouth with rich chocolate flavours as it slowly dissolved inside, tantalising the taste buds.

IMG_8984ed
Shiratama Azuki 3.5/5

I found it very interesting for the Shiratama Azuki ($6) to be served in a waffle shell with a scoop of ice cream, azuki red beans and mochi. I had the Matcha ice cream but if you prefer other flavours you can also try their Yuzu or Salt ice cream which seemed to be favourite among the diners.

IMG_8435ed

IMG_8442ed

Actually this is my first time having Sogurt's yogurt and I find it different from those usually I got from supermarkets or had at hotel's buffet breakfast. Sogurt's yogurt texture is more like sorbet type. The icy smooth and not too sweet fruit based sweet-tangy flavours were my favourite, it feels like I am having the real fruit.

Following the opening of NamNam Noodle Bar at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Centre on 15 October 2012, the casual restaurant spin off from the Les Amis Group's Annam Vietnamese Cuisine opened its 2nd outlet at the basement of Wheelock Place in November 2012. The casual Vietnamese noodle bar features 11 bowls of Vietnamese noodles lifted from the streets of different regions in Vietnam. Apart from noodles, NamNam Noodle Bar serves the French inspired baguettes also known as Banh Mi.

IMG_9009ed
Lime Soda 3.8/5

Upon settling down we ordered our beverages. We had the Lime Soda ($3) which was served in a nostalgic metal mug.

IMG_9006ed
Pho Wagyu Beef Slices 4/5

Since this is a Vietnamese noodle bar, we have to try their Pho. Currently there are 5 different bowls of Pho available in their menu. I odered the Pho Wagyu Beer Slices ($16.90) which is the most expensive in the menu. Came with slices of beautiful Wagyu beef that was cooked by the delicious broth. The intense broth was boiled for at least 24 hours. The rice noodle was also firm and smooth. My girlfriend felt that the soup was a bit sour but I liked the soury from the lime and the fish sauce.

IMG_9011ed
Mouse Tail Noodle Soup 4/5

I was not aware that Vietnamese has mouse tail noodle in their cuisine. The noodle is similar to our chinese Mee Tai Mak and I always thought only the Chinese eats that. The Mouse Tail Noodle Soup ($9.90) apparently Vietnamese breakfast or supper staple. The bowl of mouse tail noodle soup came with fish balls and slices of pig leg meat. The soup was not as intense compared to the Pho soup. It was lighter and has a hint of garlic taste.

IMG_9012ed
Fried Prawn & Pork Roll 4/5

The Fried Prawn & Pork Roll ($4.90) was deep fried to a nice crisp with a nice balanced of flavours in the filling.

IMG_9015ed
Caramelised 5 Spice Pork Belly, Pork Pate Banh Mi 3.8/5

My first Banh Mi was actually in Melbourne and I fell in love with it. I was looking forward to have it in Singapore but none has excited my palate. The Caramelised 5 Spice Pork Belly, Pork Mate Banh Mi ($5.90) at NamNam Noodle Bar came close but the baguette was not as crisp and the proportion of the fluffy part is too much.

IMG_9018ed
Vanilla Pudding, Palm Sugar Caramel 3.5/5

I will call this the Vietnamese creme burlee, the Vanilla Pudding, Palm Sugar Caramel ($3.90). The dessert was extremely sweet and definitely one for the sweet tooth.

IMG_9019ed
Chilled 3 Colour Dessert 4/5

The Chilled 3 Colour Dessert ($3.90) once again resembles another dessert, Red Ruby. A simple but yet flavourfully balanced dessert with chestnut, chendol, mung beans and corns.

The gentle on the the wallet Vietnamese bistro serves affordable Vietnamese street food with no service charge with all prices included GST. NamNam Noodle Bar also has great dining deals on weekdays. The Good Morning Vietnamnam Breakfast Set ($5.90) includes a Banh Mi and a drink while the 3 course Lunch Set ($9.90) includes a choice of chicken/beef Pho, 2 southern rolls and a drink.

A long tray of fresh raw vegetables is served at Bornga when you dine you. I actually adore the idea instead of repeat request for refilling. Interesting fact that even the long tray is patented.

IMG_9082ed
Samgyupsal

IMG_9089ed
Samgyupsal 4.2/5

If you noticed, the meat at Bornga is in its natural colour without any pre-marination causing the colour of the meat to be dark brown or black. Concerned about the appearance of Korean BBQ meats, Chef Paik created a new Korean style of BBQ while keeping the natural colour and taste of meats. The Samgyupsal or Grilled Pork Belly ($18) is chosen for the right proportion of fat and meat. Surprisingly the grilled pork belly tasted as good or even much better in its natural flavour without marination.

IMG_9086ed
Woo Samgyup

IMG_9094ed
Woo Samgyup 4.5/5

The star attraction and probably the reason for repeated customers is the Woo Samgyup or Thinly Sliced Beef with Bornga's Special Sauce ($22). Woo Samgyup is served shortly after being doused in a unique dressing that retains the meat's natural colour while enhancing the traditional bulgogi taste. The beautiful marbled meat was tender and juicy. In exact fact, it tasted better than bulgogi/galbi. I will definitely return for it again.

IMG_9092ed

3 different types of dipping sauces are served at Bornga. Woo Samgyup sauce, Bean Paste sauce and Sesame Oil with Salt. The darker coloured one is the Woo Samgyup sauce, another of Chef Paik's patented creation.

IMG_9112ed
Chadol Duejang Jjigae

IMG_9113ed
Chadol Duejang Jjigae 4.2/5

Another signature at Bornga is the Chadol Duejang Jjigae ($16). The Korean beef stew made with rich soybean paste is reduced over a few minutes at table side over a table top stove. The stew is then poured over the rice, mixed and served like a bibimbap. Each mouthful of the rice coated with the beef stew was filled with wonderful flavours partying on the palate.

IMG_9100ed
Jap Chae 3/5

The Jap Chae ($23) which is glass noodles stir fried with pork and vegetables. The silky glass noodles were nicely flavoured by the soy sauce but I felt it was a bit on the oily side.

IMG_9104ed
Naengmyeon 4.2/5

Another favourite of mine in Korean cuisine is Naengmyeon ($15), buckwheat noodles with cold broth. The best method of eating cold noodles is to add some mustard and vinegar to it. The combinations of sour, sweet and spicy was very appetising and refreshing summer dish for the Singapore weather.

IMG_9109ed
Kimchi Jjigae 4.2/5

Kimchi Jjigae ($15) is a hearty and comfort spicy stew with kimchi, pork, tofu and vegetables. Give me a pot of kimchi jjigae and a bowl of rice I will be content.

IMG_9114ed
Haemul Pajeon 3.5/5

The Haemul Pajeon ($22), Korean pancake made with scallions and a variety of seafood. The egg batter, wheat flour and rice flour mixture was not too thick with a slight crisp on the surface. The haemul pajeon itself was a bit bland and it is best enjoyed with the dipping sauce.

IMG_9118ed
Omija

At the end of dinner, diners at Bornga will be served a complimentary drink, Omija also known as 5 flavour tea. The refreshing drink with its sour, sweet and bitter taste is really ideal to cleanse the palate after all the BBQ meat.

Bornga is an ideal place for family and friend gathering. Like any other Korean BBQ restaurant, do expect to smell like BBQ meat yourself after meal.

Goodbye 2012 and welcome 2013. A great thanks to all the readers, supporters, media friends and friends. 2012 has been a busy year for me and it was not easy maintaining the blog while at the same time striking a balance between my full time job and personal life.

Being a food blogger, many times friends and readers will ask me for recommendations or which is the best restaurant I have visited? Here is a wrap up of the restaurants in 2012 that I have visited and I find their food memorable. Since my blog is about food near the MRT stations, the 10 restaurants below (not in any order of merit) are selected as they are near to MRT stations too.

Without further a do, I present to you SG Food on Foot Top 10 Best Restaurants 2012.

Nana's Green Tea Cafe @ Plaza Singapura

IMG_9122ed

Matcha or finely ground and powdered green tea is known for its numerous health benefits. Changing the traditional way of appreciating matcha, Nana's Green Tea Cafe well known in Japan as the "Japanese Starbucks"offers a varieties of tasty and artistic matcha creations. Apart from the offering of tantalising matcha tea, the cafe also offers a range of delectable Japanese cuisine and delightful desserts.

If I am not wrong, Nana's Green Tea Cafe used to be at Jcube but it has closed and moved to the new location at Plaza Singapura new wing. Do correct me if I am wrong. However, I am sure that this is their first outlet outside Singapore.

IMG_9130ed
Matcha Latte Hot 3.5/5

The combo of matcha green tea and milk was quite pleasant. Maybe I should switch from my normal caffe latte to Matcha Latte Hot ($7.00) for the obvious health benefits. Second thought I shall wait a bit longer when they have more outlets before converting.

IMG_9131ed
Salmon Don 4/5

The Salmon Don ($14.80) came with fresh salmon sashimi served over warm Japanese rice garnished with sesame oil, nori, Japanese pickled ginger, spring onion, daikon sprout and a drizzle of mayonnaise sauce.

IMG_9135ed
Locomoko Don 4/5

The Locomoko Don ($15.80) is another hearty and comforting dish. The beef patty was served over warm Japanese rice garnished with lettuce, tomato, broccoli and an egg sunny side up.

IMG_9136ed
Mushi-Dori Goma Dare Udon 4.2/5

The Mushi-Dori Goma Dare Udon ($13.80) was the favourite among the group. The star definitely is the special sesame sauce for the cold nooldes. It was beautifully paired with the imported udon which has a nice chewy texture.

IMG_9138ed
Matcha Shiratama Parfait 4.2/5

The Matcha Shiratama Parfait ($11.80) brought a smile to everyone's face. Like a kid in treasure hunt, we dug into the parfait to discover layers after layers of surprises. The artisan dessert bottom is a layer of kanten jelly (tradtional Japanese herbal jelly) and matcha syrup topped with vanilla ice cream, corn flakes and garnished with a scoop of match ice cream, red bean paste, mochi and whipped cream.

The modern Japanese restaurant and match tea bar, Nana's Green Tea Cafe introduces hip fun and flavourable good quality matcha tea and Japanese cuisine to Singapore with its flagship store outside Japan at Plaza Singapura new wing. Keeping the essence of the Japanese tea drinking culture, the cafe is suitable for social gatherings. I also understand most of the items in the menu is not available in their Japanese outlets. It has been customised to suit the local taste.

Bar Stories @ Haji Lane

Have you heard of Bespoke Cocktails? It means walking into a bar and the mixlogist will customise your drink depending on your mood and taste. I have not been to one until recently when I met Maureen for a drink at Bar Stories before our tasting session in the evening.

IMG_9023ed

Located among the rows of shophouses at hip Haji lane, the quirky bar located at the 2nd floor maybe a bit difficult to spot. Upon settling down in the bar, we were wondering what to do as there was no menu around. The owner who was a table away spotted us and probably he could tell from our confused face, came over and asked whether it is our first time at Bar Stories.

IMG_9025ed

After giving us a brief introduction of the place and checking what sort of taste/flavours we like, the owner asked the mixologist to mix a cocktail for each of us.

IMG_9026ed

Maureen who is crazy with Ispahan requested for her cocktail to come with lychee and rose syrup. As we are not really an alcohol person, the cocktail is a bit too strong in alcohol content for us. We preferred it to be sweeter.

IMG_7619

Noticed that Maureen did not finish her drink, the owner made her another glass of cocktail that was more refreshing and sweeter with berries and grapes flavours partying in the glass.

IMG_9027ed

As I preferred sour taste, the mixologist made me a passionfruit inspired cocktail. The cocktail was much refreshing and easy to drink compare to Maureen's Ispahan inspired cocktail.

I really like the concept of bespoke cocktails. The excitement and thrill of a different customised cocktail depending on one's mood and taste. The hidden cocktail bar is a nice chill out place away from the crowd with each cocktail ranges from $20 to $24.

SushiAirways Sushi Bar (寿司航空) @ Baghdad Street

IMG_9310ed

A new airline has landed in Singapore but not at Singapore Changi Airport. The new airline, SushiAirways Sushi Bar (寿司航空) has landed at the quaint Kampong Glam conservation area along Baghdad Street. The Sushi Bar interior resembles the 1930s Douglas DC-3, a fixed-wing propeller driven airplane. Climbing up a flight of stairs leading to the cabin, I was greeted by the cheerful leading air stewardess Simbian Chua who showed us to our first class seat.

The captain at the cockpit is Chef Wong Eng Chun who was formerly from Hyatt. The food at SushiAirways is both meticulous and exquisite, it does not serve the usual airline food that is pre-cooked and re-heat before serving.

IMG_9313ed
Red Snapper Fish Roe 4.5/5

I am treated to some items on SushiAirways' Omakase (ranges from $180 to $250) which means leaving the selection to the chef. Starting with Red Snapper Fish Roe, it reminds me of the pig's brain which I used to eat when I was young. Look can be quite deceiving but this light and refreshing appertiser paired with Chef Wong's homemade soy sauce was very "oishii".

IMG_9317ed
Temaki Roll 4.5/5

When we were served the plates of uni (sea urchin), tuna, tobiko (fish roe) and nori (seaweed), there was a look of confusion in our eyes. What should we do with the 2 plates of ingredients. Lucky the captain of the plane came to our rescue, he told us to to eat it like a Temaki Roll (Hand Roll). This is a first for me to Do-It-Yourself a hand roll without the sushi rice.

IMG_9327ed
Special Chef's Sashimi Mori 4.5/5

The Special Chef's Sashimi Mori (Small $58, Large $98) of assorted premium sashimi of the day came with abundance of freshness swimming in a bowl of ice garden.

IMG_9330ed
Today's Premium Assorted Sushi 4.2/5

We also tried the Today's Premium Assorted Sushi (Small $38, Large $58). The fresh ingredients with a nice proportion of rice was very delectable.

IMG_9337ed
Miso Soup 4/5

I was wondering why the Miso Soup was served in the midde of our meal instead at the beginning which most restaurants do. Unlike others, the miso soup here is only cook a la minute hence it was not as salty compared to those that was pre-cooked and kept under constant heat.

IMG_9339ed
Mango Roll 3.8/5

The Mango Roll ($30) was beautifully presented but not practical. The mango kept sliding down from the sushi roll. Hence it felt like the flavours were separated as we needed to eat the mango separately. The mango was also not sweet enough, lacking the refreshing contrast in taste.

IMG_9348ed
Avocado Roll 4.2/5

The Avocado Roll ($25) on the other hand was beautiful executed with the different flavours gelling together.

IMG_9353ed
Soba 4.2/5

Not available on the menu is the cold soba made from yam. The chef explained that this particular soba is not available on the menu due to irregular supply from Japan. However, if it is available they will recommend it to the customer. The soba is paler in colour, thinner and smoother in texture.

IMG_7628
Nikka Whisky

SushiAirways also has an extensive list of beverages known as refuelling point in their menu. Bottled in a similar Chanel perfume bottle, the multi awards winning Nikka Whisky from the barrel is bottled directly out of the cask, giving it a unique character.

IMG_9304ed

For those that is tight on the wallet, worry not. SushiAirways also offers delectable lunch set at just $15.

The flying experience at SushiAirways Sushi Bar is like on board a private jet plane where you have a personal team of crew serving you. While indulging in the delicious Japanese cuisine, those in the window seats can also enjoy a panoramic view of the conservation area.

Soi Thai Kitchen @ Tampines

IMG_9430ed

With the success story of Nakhon Kitchen, I am not surprise to see another Thai restaurant opening its door for business at neighbourhood area. Soi Thai Kitchen is established about six months ago at block 824 Tampines Street 81. Relying on my lunch partner, Maureen's dining experience at Nakhon Kitchen, she told me the concept at Soi Thai Kitchen is similar to Nakhon Kitchen even down to the plates used for the food. I have not tried Nakhon Kitchen because I was always turned off by the long queues. Anyway back to the food at Soi Thai Kitchen...

IMG_9407ed
Thick Tom Yum Soup (prawn) 3.8/5

Came with fresh prawns and mushrooms, the Thick Tom Yum Soup ($6) was not too spicy. I felt it was just right with a nice balanced of sourness and spiciness. Only disappointment there is no seafood Tom Yum Soup on the menu. I would prefer more choices in my tom yum soup not just only prawn or chicken.

IMG_9411ed
Thai Style Kang Kong 4/5

For just a mere 6 dollar, the portion was quite worthy. Nicely cooked to a crunchy bite, the Thai Style Kang Kong ($6) came with a very homely flavour.

IMG_9409ed
Beef Paneang 4.2/5

Using beef cheeks for the Beef Paneang ($10), the Thai style red chilli beef was my favourite. The beef cheeks were extremely tender with a nice thin layer of fats. It is not really a spicy dish more towards the sweetness side. The gravy goes with the rice very well.

IMG_9414ed
Thai Yellow Ginger Chicken 4/5

The Thai Yellow Ginger Chicken ($8) was very flavourful, nicely coated with the yellow ginger sauce. The chicken was tender and juicy. However we thought the dish can be a bit spicier.

IMG_9418ed
Sea Bass with Namjim Larb 4.2/5

Something for a different this time, I tried the Sea Bas with Namjim Larb ($22). The highlight was the Namjim dipping sauce. Made with ingredients such as garlic, fish sauce, lime juices, sugar and chilli, the sourness went very well with the fish meat. In addition, the dipping sauce also came with minced pork in it.

IMG_9425ed
Mango Sticky Rice 4/5

We had the Mango Sticky Rice ($5) wrapping up the sumptuous lunch at Soi Thai Kitchen.

I consider Soi Thai Kitchen value for money with the wallet friendly pricing. At Soi Thai Kitchen, you can also send back your food for adjustment if you find it not spicy enough or too spicy to your likings. Now or rather for the moment, I have a good alternative and reason to skip Nakhon Kitchen if I want to beat the queues for Thai food.

MEDZ @ Millenia Walk

IMG_8581ed

I got to know MEDZ due to an blogger event I attended back in November 2012. The concept is similar to Marche but offers mediterranean cuisine. Food presentation on the other hand is more appertising compared to Marche. Iit felt like you are being served in a proper sit down dinning restaurant. The restaurant also has an eclectic global selections of beer and cider.

IMG_8604ed
Cured Salmon Bruschetta 4/5

You have to agreed with me the presentation of the Cured Salmon Bruschetta ($16.90) was pretty isn't it? The presentation itself is alreadying stimulating to the appetite. The cured salmon resting on top of the crusty bread is beautifully paired with pesto.

IMG_8606ed
Spanish Omelette "Tortilla" with Aioli Dip 4.2/5

Not to be confused by the Mexican flatbread tortilla, the Spanish Omelette or Spanish Tortilla is a Spanish dish commonly made with egg, potatoes and onion. The thick and fluffy egg omelette paired with the zesty aioli dip was a hearty appertiser.

IMG_8613ed
Moroccan Beef and Caramelized Apple Stew Tajine with Couscous 4/5

This is my first time to come across the Tajine, a special earthenware pot. The dish was even served in it. The Moroccan Beef was fork tender with a nice fruity sweetness to it. Served with rice, it will be a filling dish for the hungry stomach.

IMG_8614ed
Charcoal Grilled Baby Sea Bream 4/5

The Charcoal Grilled Baby Sea Bream is served with aubergine gratin, mashed potato and watercress salad. Cooked perfectly with a hint of smokiness, the sea bream was moist and delectable.

IMG_8619ed
Braised Cook Chicken Paella 4/5

The Braised Cook Chicken Paella with chorizo and saffron is nicely flavoured by the spices. The rice has a good texture that was not mushy.

IMG_8621ed
Kakavia Fish Stew 4.2/5

Came with grilled fish, mussels and mash potatoes in a creamy sauce, the Kakavia Fish Stew ($20.90) is my personal favourite at MEDZ currently. I have been back to MEDZ twice and I never failed to order this dish.

The restaurant is an ideal place for group gathering due to the spacious venue. Food is pretty decent too. I even returned with my friends to have our Christmas gathering here.

Named after the fourth largest city in Indonesia, Medan Town is located at the growing dining enclave of Tanjong Katong.  The casual dining restaurant offers home style Medanese food which reflects the diverse cooking styles of the different races living in Medan.

Bihun Bebek Dry  4/5

The marquee dish at Medan Town is the Bihun Bebek Dry/Soup ($5.80). I tried the beehoon dry served with duck herbal soup on the side. The bowl of beehoon was topped with generous amount of shredded duck, fried garlic, spring onion and bean sprouts. I understand the rice noodle is made in Medan. It comes with a unique springy texture that is different from others.

Nasi Redang Sapi 4.2/5

The other dish at Medan Town that caught my attention is the Nasi Redang Sapi ($6.50). The redang was extremely tender but it was the flavour that woke my palate. At that instant, memories of Indonesia trips flashed across my mind, an authentic taste that has long been forgotten.

Klepon 3/5

The Klepon ($2.50 for 5pc) is boiled rice cake stuffed with palm sugar and rolled in grated coconut. Singaporean will probably known it better as oneh oneh. The rice cake has a nice chewy texture but I am a bit disappointed with the fillings. I prefer the palm sugar filling to be of flowing fluid form.

Es Campur Medan 3/5 and Es Chendol Medan 3/5

Wrapping up the dinner, we ordered the Campur Medan ($3) and Chendol Medan ($3). Both are shaved ice dessert with coconut milk and palm sugar. The different is the ingredients used. I preferred the Campur Medan over the Chendol Medan. Although the chendol was homemade, the colour was unappetising and lacking in texture.

I previously visited a Medanese cuisine restaurant and was not impressed with the food. Medan Town has changed my opinion with Medanese cuisine and I am glad to discover the casual dining restaurant. Now I am another restaurant to go to when I am crave for Indonesian food.

Boon Tong Kee? Isn't it the famous chicken rice stall? Don't be mistaken, although the stall at Zion Riverside Food Centre has the same name they are not related. Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap Braised Duck (文通记粿汁卤鸭) is opened by a lady owner who's stall always has a long queue of customers trying to savour its delicious kway chap.

The bowl of kway had a slight tad of herbal taste which came from hours of simmering in herbs and duck bones.

Kway Chap 4.2/5

I could not find the exact word to describe the taste of Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap when I first had it. I knew it was different. It lacked the rustic flavours but yet delish. I think ieatishootipost best describle it as new world taste. The gravy that was poured over the ingredients was also thicker with a nice hint of herbal taste.
