Chai Chee Teochew Bak Chor Mee @ 7 Starts Coffeeshop (Dover Crescent)

During my visit to Grill Werkz at Dover Crescent, I noticed Chai Chee Teochew Bak Chor Mee has also opened in the same coffeeshop. I was told that at its peak, there were around 20 stalls around Singapore. After disappearing from the scene for a while, it seems like it is making another come back with a few stalls already springing out at various part of Singapore.

IMG_7164ed
Bak Chor Mee 3/5

I was lucky to spot the owner at the new stall at dover crescent, hence we requested him to cook our bowl of noodle because we heard about the inconsistency if it is cooked by his staff. The noodles indeed was nicely cooked to an al dente texture, with an enjoyable bite to it.

IMG_7166ed

While the noodles are perfectly executed and also comes with generous toppings such as fishball, fish dumpling, fish cake, mushroom and minced meat, the bowl of noodles lacked depth and missing the vinegar punch I like for my bak chor mee.

The Meeting Place @ Clementi Market & Food Centre - Cheap Does Not Mean Good.

IMG_0465ed

Sometime back an anonymous reader left a comment on my review of Star Yong Kwang BBQ Seafood about the pricey bill and compared it with The Meeting Place at Clementi Market & Food Centre. I finally find the time to go down down to the stall at Clementi Ave 2, to see and try the food for myself.

IMG_7701ed
BBQ Stingray 3/5

As a staple for all BBQ seafood stall, I ordered the BBQ Stingray ($14). Price wise it is about the same as most places. The sambal chilli that is spread on top of the stingray is a bit on the salty side for me but it still acceptable. My disappointment is actually on the fact that the chilli sauce is not cooked together with the stingray but smeared on top of it.

IMG_7695ed
Kang Kong 3.5/5

The first thing I noticed while placing my order is how cheap the Kang Kong is priced at $4 and $6. The Kang Kong ($4) is actually quite well executed with a nice crunchy bite. My only complain is portion size. I could still remember the shock expression from my wife's face when the dish was served to our table.

IMG_7698ed
BBQ Mussel 3.8/5

My favourite among the dishes I tried is the BBQ Mussel ($6). I like the fact that it is steamed and topped with sambal chilli sauce instead of stir frying them in the chili sauce. It allows the appreciation of the natural sweetness and juiciness of the mussels. The stall may need to be careful with the freshness of the mussel as I tasted some that is not so fresh.

Overall, I can understand why the anonymous reader recommended the stall. Unfortunately I don't find that cheap is equate to good. There maybe other factors that may determine the pricing such as rental cost, supplier etc.

Xing Yun Kway Chap @ Tampines Round Market & Food Centre - Opens Only 3 Days A Week Kway Chap Stall

IMG_9888ed

I got to know about Xing Yun Kway Chap at Tampines Round Market & Food Centre, when I noticed a facebook posting from my friend who is queuing for the kway chap. Apparently the stall only opens three times a week, from Friday to Sunday. It immediate aroused my interests to find out for myself what is so good about their kway chap.

IMG_7181ed

The very following week, I made the long journey from West to East. There was already a queue when I reached. We have to queue for around 45 minutes for our turn to order. Since it took us so long, we ordered almost everything including the pig tongue. My friend was telling me that he spotted the stall auntie brimming with smile when she heard our order.

IMG_7173ed
Kway Chap 4.5/5

IMG_7177ed
Kway Chap 4.5/5

So what is the verdict of the kway chap? It is worth the queue. Many may worry about the gamy taste of the innards but the ingredients were all well cleaned, braised and absorbed the flavoursome sauce. What I enjoyed even more is the balanced consistency of the sauce which is neither too sweet or salty. It sure suits my taste buds.

IMG_7179ed
Kway 4.2/5

Not to forget the other component of a good kway chap, the sheets of kway. The kway was smooth and thin. A mixture of pork ribs broth and braising sauce makes up the soup base for the delish bowl of rice sheets.

Having tried the kway chap myself, I can understand why patrons are willing to wait up to almost an hour for the delicious kway chap. I have to thank my friend who posted the stall on facebook, allowing me to discover another good kway chap stall in my food journey.

Rojak Line @ Holland Drive Food Centre - Vegetarian Shrimp Paste Rojak & Toasted You Tiao Popiah

IMG_7650ed

There is hope in our hawker scene when another young hawker ditched her office job and started a hawker stall at Holland Drive Food Centre selling Rojak. The month old Rojak Line is started by 31 years old Debbie, who likes rojak but cannot stands the taste of the shrimp paste. Hence she created her own vegetarian shrimp taste.

IMG_7648ed
Rojak 4/5

The plate of Rojak ($4/$5/$6) comes with fruits, cucumber, toasted you tiao (dough fritter), tau pok and topped with peanuts. We like the sweet and tangy shrimp paste sauce that is used to hold the variety of ingredients together. It was only later when we chatted with the owner that we realized she is using her own special vegetarian shrimp paste sauce. We could not tell the different at all. It is really good.

IMG_7646ed

The weak link for the plate of rojak is the doughy you tiao. For it to be crispier, it needs to be toasted a bit longer or at least cut into smaller size. The pineapple was not ripe enough so it was a bit hard to bite. If it is riper, the sweetness will it a nice balance to the whole execution.

IMG_7652ed
Toasted You Tiao Popiah 4/5

A interested dish on the menu is the Toasted You Tiao Popiah ($2). The toasted you tiao with the special vegetarian shrimp paste sauce and peanut is wrapped with popiah skin. I thought this is an interesting way of bringing two traditional dishes together for a new eat. While my friend do not like the doughy you tiao, I thought otherwise. I find that the doughy texture suit the whole concept, as if I am chewing a churro.

IMG_7655ed

Another popular item at the stall which we did not get to try as it was sold out is the Vegetarian Popiah ($1.80) that comes with turnip, carrot, salad, shitake, sweet sauce, crispy bits, peanut, chilli and garlic. Vegan may request not to have garlic.

Overall, I am impressed with the vegetarian shrimp paste sauce. This is my first time having it and I have to admit I will not be able to tell the different if the owner has not revealed to us. It is only a month into business, so I am sure there will be some fine tuning and improvement along the way. I really look forward to Rojak Line scaling new heights in the new future. All the best.

Putien @ Ion Orchard - Duo Tou Clam, A Delicacy For Over 600 Years

IMG_7881ed

It has been a good 5 years since I last visited Putien. My memorable of Putien has been their homely Xing Hua cuisine. It seems like during these 5 years, the culinary standard at Putien has been elevated to a new level. I was pleasantly surprised with the food during my recent visit to Putien at Ion Orchard to check out Putien Ingredient Festival 2016 with the Putien Duo Tou Clams Festival spearheading the celebration from April to August.

IMG_7876ed

So what is so special about Dou Tou Clams? Apparently this unique specialty from Dou Tou Village in the Hanjiang district of Putian has over 600 years of history. The golden shell clams that are harvested are second to none mainly because of the rare black mud where they are bred, which is rich in nutrients, pure and with little sand particles. Hence the clams are especially plump and meaty, growing up to 6cm in length.

IMG_7857ed
Steamed Putien Clam with Minced Garlic 4.2/5

During the Duo Tou Clam Festival from April to August, Putien will showcase numerous way of cooking this delicacy. The Steamed Putien Clam with Minced Garlic ($20.90/$31.90) is steamed lightly with minced garlic, spring onion and chillis. To enjoy the sweetness of the clam, drizzled a bit of the soy sauce in the middle onto the calm, and eat it together with the minced garlic.

IMG_7868ed
Steamed Putien Clam with Wine 4.2/5

The Steamed Putien with Wine ($20.90/$31.90) is filled to the the brim with Duo Tou clam. It is then steamed in a upright form with Hua Diao Chinese wine. The natural sweetness of the clam is further perfumed by the aroma of the Chinese wine. That's not all, don't forget to drink the essence of the broth at the bottom of the bowl that collected the juicy of the clam.

IMG_7869ed
Salted Spicy Putien Clam 3/5

The Salted Spicy Putien Clam ($20.90/$31.90) comes with a flour batter coated around the Duo Tou clam and deep fried to crispy before lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. I thought the batter was a bit thick and I could not really taste the sweetness of clam which I got to enjoy in the other cooking styles.

IMG_7870ed
Putien Clam Omelette 3.5/5

A reminiscent of home cooking, exactly the way how the people in the village in Putian enjoys it is the Putien Clam Omelette ($20.90/$31.90). A simple execution but has that comforting feeling of home dining. Must to pair it with the Putien homemade chilli sauce.

IMG_7874ed
Stir Fried Putien Clam with Ginger and Spring Onion 4.5/5

The golden coloured shell of the Duo Tou Clam can be must seen in this dish. The traditional way of cooking the juicy and meaty clams is to stir fried it with ginger and spring onion. The Stir Fried Putien Clam with Ginger and Spring Onion ($20.90/$31.90) is wholesomely executed for the fullest appreciation of its natural sweetness.

IMG_7879ed
Baked Putien Clam on Hot Plate 4.5/5

The Baked Putien Clam on Hot Plate ($20.90/$31.90) is the next best way to bring out the natural sweetness of the clam with a gentle dip of the sea salt. It felt like a gentle sea breeze blowing onto the shore, tantalizing the taste buds with a natural briny goodness.

IMG_7884ed
Putien Clam Soup with Tofu Meatballs 4.2/5

The Putien Clam Soup with Tofu Meatballs ($20.90/$31.90) is both comforting and hearty. The clams are boiled together with an assortment of cauliflower, snow peas, and tofu meatballs for the natural sweetness. While the soup is very refreshing and in which you can taste the sweetness of the clam, the other star is the tofu meatballs. Painstakingly made in house, this is one of its kind. The taste of soy bean together with the silky texture is a new for me and I could not hold my excitement in tasting something new and good in my food journey.

Putien's Duo TOu Clam Festival will be available from April to August 2016. Savour the different ways of cooking this delicacy that is second to none with over 600 years of history. Do also look forward to other promotion such as Yellow Croaker Fish Festival such from July to September 2016 and Seaweed Festival from October to December 2016.

Ultimate Rice Dumpling Listing 2016

RiceDumpling2016

Dragon Boat Festival or Duan Wu Jie (端午节) is just around the corner on 9 June 2016. It is celebrated in Singapore in events like dragon boat race as well as eating rice dumplings. Dragon Boat Festival origins from the sacrifice of Qu Yuan, a legendary Chinese poet. He drowned himself to protest against the rulers for corruption. Dragon boat races are organised symbolizing searching for Qu Yuan's body along the river. It is said that dumplings were thrown into the river to stop fish from feeding on the poet's body as well as making noise to scare the fish away. Hence the originating of rice dumpling but now it is served on the table as delicacy instead.

Every year in celebration of the festival, many restaurants and hotels will be offering the traditional rice dumpling as well as new creations to entice guests who are either buying them for self consumption or gift. Welcome Drink and Mikuni Small Bite 3.8/5

During this special guest chef appearance at Mikuni, Chef Mok and Chef Moon will prepare a 5-course lunch menu and a 9-course dinner menu. The menu focuses on balance and complement. As teppanyaki tends to be heavier in taste and body, the dish alternates between Chef Mok's and that of Chef Moon, which is towards light and tang.

The evening started with a welcome drink by Bannie Kang, a talented mixologist at Anti:dote, alongside a Mikuni Small Bite - Uni and Prawn, encapsulated within the membrane. The flavours that burst out upon a bite, was pretty stimulating. Followed by a sip of the refreshing cocktail concocted with sake and pineapple, this prepped my palate for what was to come - Foie Gras.

Foie Gras, Teriyaki Sauce, Seasonal Fruits 4/5

Foie Gras, seared with crisp sides, was almost like a melted aged cheese to me. Intensified by the accompanying sweet, savoury Teriyaki sauce, I could appreciate its flavour even more so. The seasonal fruits helped to cut back its richness.

20160509_195509_HDR
Seasonal "Hamo" Fish Clear Soup, Plum 3.5/5

To cleanse our palate, Chef Moon presented a soup item - Seasonal "Hamo" Fish Clear Soup. The warmth of the soup releases the fragrance of the plum and the yuzu flower. As I cupped the bowl with my hands and brought it closer for a sip, I was surprised by the hint of plum's fragrance. It was so comforting to feel the warmth in my hands and smell the sweet smelling plum upon drinking.

Kyushu Abalone, Seaweed Sauce 3.5/5

Next we had Kyushu Abalone. When a usual abalone dish is hardly original, this however, intrigued my appetite. Greased with buttered Seaweed Sauce, That really makes this abalone dish exciting for me.

20160509_202430_HDR
Hokkaido Snow Crab, Aomori Apple, Yuzu Jelly 4.5/5

To refresh our senses again in preparation for the next Chef Mok's creation, we had Hokkaido Snow Crab. This is one of my favourites of the evening. All the elements incorporated into making this dish set to rejuvenate our senses. Apart from the organic green plate which awakened my eyes immediately, there was the tangy yuzu jelly and the refreshing crunchy diced amori apple. The star is of course the Hokkaido snow crab, that was pleasingly sweet and tender.

20160509_203941_HDR
Crispy Sweet Sea Bream "Ama Tai" Fish, Sea Urchin Cream 4.5/5

One of the most luxury fish of Japan, Sweet Sea Bream, was up next. Once the oil has reached the right temperature, Chef Mok gently placed the Ama Tai into the wok. Crispy is an understatement, when each scale of the skin was crisped to spikes. In contrast, the fish underneath was moist, almost buttery like cod. The Sea Urchin Cream reminded me of a foie gras cream which I had recently tasted, but much mellower. All I wish was to have a spoon to scoop every single drop of it. I reckon it's not easy to put two strong ingredients together, but there's no tug of war happening here at all. Only with great understanding of both ingredients can such brilliant execution be achieved.

20160509_205024_HDR
Hakkaido Scallop, Summer Black Truffle, Lime, Crunchy Hasu-Imo 4/5

After sinking our senses deep into the moist, rich and cream, Chef Moon's Hokkaido Scallop uplifted them with its crunch and zest. The effort that goes into creating and plating this dish is unbelievable. The dry ice sublimed with a release of lemongrass perfuming the surrounding. Sliced and layered with seaweed in between, the sweetness of the scallop was being elevated. Beautiful apple blossoms dotted the earthy tone, like fallen summer petals. Not simply decorative, each of these tiny buds actually releases a sweet and tart flavour, which jelled well with the fragrant lime zest and the crunchy pickled lotus yam.

20160509_210815_HDR
Miyazaki A5 Wagyu Tenderloin, Crispy Garlic, Wasabi, Salt 4.5/5

The evening reached its climax with Chef Mok's Miyazaki A5 Wagyu Tenderloin. I was really anticipating this dish. I only had it once before at Gyu and I didn't expect to be blessed with it again. Chef Mok has a way to eat it, and hence, please hold your chopsticks and watch his demonstration before you start. Medium rare, crispy garlic on top, and than a dot of Wasabi. Taste the original first, before dipping it into the salt, if it's really necessary. Exquisite piece of meat, it melted in my mouth like no other.

20160509_213322_HDR
Hiyashi Plum Somen Noodles, Shrimp, Egg, Shiitake Mushroom 4.5/5

With all the heat built up inside us, Chef moon cooled us down with his Hiyashi Plum Somen Noodles. The egg helps to bring all the ingredients together by coating the noodles and thickening the cold soup. I wish I could slurp it like Japanese do. Just when I thought my stomach was full, I finished it within minutes.

I love vegetables, and tonight's dessert, Japanese Shiso Leaf Sorbet, just reaffirmed my affection for it. I like Shiso leaf, especially with sashimi. To eat it in dessert form is amazing. It was almost 10pm when I had it, and I think I wouldn't reject the second bowl if I'm afford another one.

20160509_214744_HDR
Japanese Shiso Leaf Sorbet, Yoghurt Mousse, Strawberry 4.5/5

When I first arrived, Chef Moon introduced his menu in the sense that his dishes are more to support Chef Mok's , for palate cleansing in some ways. However, I feel that both work towards accentuating each other's strength, complimenting and balancing each other. It is the existence of the heavy and rich dishes that allows me to have a much fuller appreciation on the light and refreshing dishes, vice verse.

Indeed, it is eye-opening to see Chef Mok and Chef Moon, both of no Japanese origin, to display such expertise in Japanese cuisine. From menu creation to execution, the food becomes a language for both accomplished chefs to communicate their respect and appreciation for each other's skills, knowledge and philosophy in their own respective ground. The 5-course lunch menu priced at $168++ per person and the 9-course dinner menu priced at $258++ per person. Premium sake pairings are also available during lunch and dinner.

Melt Cafe at Mandarin Oriental Singapore will be drawing your attention to a special showcase of Indian cuisine by Indian Specialty Chef Santosh Kumar from 16 to 31 May 2016. And not just the food itself, I was welcomed by a beautiful lady dressed in Sari, with Indian music to waltz me in.

Mutton Biryani 4/5

What caught my eyes at the Indian cuisine section was their Mutton Biryani. Like a King indeed, the mutton biryani is cooked with a whole lamb, which has been roasted for hours. Apart from the tender mutton, I love the aromatic spiced basmasti rice, punctuated with sweetness lent from raisins, dried apricot etc. There was also a lot of textures to it, thanks to the crunchy carrots and green peas.

20160516_194109_HDR
Tandoori Jhinga King Prawns 3.8/5

A few notable items which I particularly like. The Tandoori Jhinga King Prawns marinated with spices and carom seeds is definitely one of them, something different from the usual tandoori fish or chicken. Fresh and succulent, the spices and carom seeds really whetted my appetite.

20160516_194011_HDR
Lamb Foie Gras 3.8/5

Lamb paired with Foie Gras is not something that I would expect, given that both ingredients inherited a rather strong and acquired flavour. However, perhaps given the right proportion, this petite item turned out to be quite palate pleasing, rather than giving me a flavour assault. The patty was moist, and not gamey. The marriage of these two is almost like that of beef patty and bacon.

Potato Stuffed with Cottage Cheese and Vegetable 3.8/5

One of my favourite snacks of the evening was this unassuming looking Potato Stuffed with Cottage Cheese and Vegetable. The potato was roasted to the right tenderness, and I really like the comforting sweetness of the stuffing.

Vegetable Curries and Flat Bread, Yogurt and Chutney 3.5/5

There is a range of vegetable curries, which you can pair with an assortment of naan flat breads with flavours such as garlic, butter, olive and cheese. To mellow the fiery and creamy curries, you may want to visit their special 'Indian snack bar' for some homemade chutneys and yogurt.

Rasmalai Cottage Cheese Balls in Cream, Dumpling with Light Syrup, Apricot Pudding

To complete the entire Indian dining experience, there are 3 Indian flavoured desserts. They are Rasmalai Cottage Cheese Balls in Cream, Dumpling with Light Syrup, Apricot Pudding. My favourite is the apricot pudding. It was sweet and sour, and aromatic with cardamom.

Apart from the Indian cuisine, another highlight for me is their cheese platter and crepes station.

Crepes with Ice Cream 4.5/5

The crepes was soft and fluffy, and was delicious even on its own. No matter how filled you are, their ice creams are a must-try. Their chocolate ice cream was rich, velvety and edged with bitterness, while the strawberry sorbet was tangy and refreshing. Their yogurt ice cream is also not-to-be missed.

Hello Kitty Orchid Garden- Interior

The world's first 24 hour Hello Kitty themed cafe has opened at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3. Hello Kitty Orchard Garden is designed to emulate the country's garden city vibe. Around the cafe, Singapore's national flower, the orchid is incorporated into the interior design with a kawaii flair of the beloved character.

Coffee lovers will enjoy the the selection of hot and iced brews made from the specially sourced gourmet Ethiopan grade 1 beans. I had the Latte which comes with a cute hello kitty latte art. It also comes with cute shaped hello kitty biscuit.

IMG_7933ed
Hola Nachos 3.5/5

A good starter for sharing is the Hola Nachos ($15.90). The fried tortilla chips is topped with parmasan, jalapenos, olives, onions and cherry tomato salsa. It comes with luscious cheddar cheese sauce that is the star that jazzed up the whole enjoyment.

IMG_7936ed
Over the Rainbow Salad 3.5/5

I do wonder why the salad dish is called Over the Rainbow Salad ($15.90). I was expecting something more colourful or at least the components on the plate resembles the colours of a rainbow. Anyway the dish comes wth mesclun salad, portobello mushrooms, pineapple, jackfruit, feta cheese, pine nuts and dressed in a laksa mustard vinaigrette. I like the idea of using the jackfruit, giving the salad a fruity and refreshing finishing. The laksa mustard vinaigrette was rather light, giving it a slight lift in flavour.

IMG_7940ed
Enchanted Forest 3/5

The Enchanted Forest ($17.90) is quesadillas sandwiched with prawn, avocado, caramelised onions, cheddar and wasabi sesame mayonnaise. The toasted tortilla shell together with the choice of ingredietns is a delectable combination.

IMG_7944ed
Cowabunga Wagyu 3/5

Finally something really kitty on the plate with the Hello Kitty shaped rice. The Cowabunga Wagyu ($24) is one of the few Asian influenced dishes on the menu. The dish comes with Japanese rice, wagyu beef rendang, onions and pineapple. The beef can be more tender and I would prefer the spices mix to be more spicy. This is also the most expensive item on the menu.

IMG_7945ed
Big Breakfast Surprise 3.8/5

Probably my favourite of all is the Big Breakfast Surprise ($18.50). The Hello Kitty waffles comes with cheddar cheese, scrambled eggs, shiitake mushrooms, smoked duck and honey lime maple syrup. I like how the subtle zest on top of the maple syrup sweetness enriched the whole experience.

IMG_7948ed
Hide and Seek 3.5/5

Moving on to the dessert, we started with the Hide and Seek ($16.90) which comes with wobbly pandan panna cotta paired with vanilla gelato, gula melaka, passionfruit and strawberry marshmallow sauce. The other Asian influenced dish that the local palate will be familiar with.

IMG_7956ed
The Cat in Paradise 3.5/5

The Cat in Paradise ($18.50) is another dessert we tried. The mango mousse cake comes with candied orange, hazelnut gelato, green apple and strawberry marshmallow sauce. The smooth and light mousse cake will be appropriate for those that does not like their dessert to be too sweet.

IMG_7954ed
Pistachio Gelato 4/5

At any one time Hello Kitty Orchard Garden will have 8 different gelato flavours to choose from. I decided to have a scoop of the Pistachio Gelato, which is pretty good with the nutty flavour and creamy texture.

IMG_7950ed
Camping Under the Stars 4/5

The Campling Under the Stars ($19.50) is probably the cutest and most photogenic dish in the whole menu. It comes with a scoop of chocolate gelato and hazelnut gelato. Graham crackers is stacked onto the gelato to make it looks like a hut. The green tea powder and toasted muesli is designed to look like the camp fire.

While the food at Hello Kitty Orchard Garden is quite decent, I felt that it lacked the in the face cutest in the dishes. Unless you are a die hard Hello Kitty fan, I doubt it is worth queuing for hours for the food.

Mr Fish @ Smith Street Food Centre - No Milk Added Fish Head Bee Hoon

IMG_7089ed

It has been a while since I have gone back to Smith Street Food Centre. This time I was actually there to check out Kent Thong Turtle Soup, but decided to dropped by Mr Fish at the same food centre after reading raving reviews of their Cantonese style fish soup.

IMG_7081ed
Fish Head Bee Hoon 4.2/5

I am sure you have eaten at many fish soup stalls. The first thing they do during ordering they will always asked you whether you want to add milk to your soup. At Mr Fish, a clear sign at the front of their stall states "No Milk Added!" in red. Why so?

IMG_7088ed

The reason for the raving reviews is because of the traditional way the stall prepares the fish soup. The stock undergone long hours of boiling to get that creamy and silky texture. Unlike many other stalls that add milk to achieve it. The portion of the Fish Head Bee Hoon ($5) is also very generous. I like the addition of cabbage for a refreshing touch on top of the richness of the soup.

IMG_7086ed
Braised Bitter Gourd and Sliced Fish 3.8/5

Besides the fish head bee hoon, we also ordered a plate of Braised Bitter Gourd and Sliced Fish ($8) to try. Cooked in a black bean sauce, this is a comforting, home cooked food. If the black bean sauce could carry more depth, then this will be excellent.

IMG_9860ed

Be prepared to wait at Mr Fish as they will come your order dish by dish. We waited for almost half an hour to our two orders. The good thing is you need not queue, they will serve the food to your table.

Steam Box @ Serangoon Garden - Steam Pot, A New Steamboat Concept UsingSteam Cooking

$

IMG_7998ed

A new steam pot place, Steam Box has recently opened at Serangoon Garden. I first experience the new way of enjoying steamboat at Rong Fu Ji at The Grandstand. Hence the concept is not exactly new to me. The so called high speed steaming technology or more commonly known as steam pot is first brought to fame in Hong Kong by Alan Tam. Similar to steamboat experience, all the ingredients are brought to the table raw. Instead of boiling, the raw ingredients is steamed in the pot around two to six minutes subject to the ingredients. This allows the natural juices and nutrients of the ingredients to be sealed in.

IMG_7996ed

First of all, diners need to chose between the Century Egg and Pork Ribs Congee ($15) or Clam and Dried Scallop Congee ($18). We choose the later in which rice grains, clams, dried scallop, ginger slices and chicken stock is added into the pot before the lid is placed over it. As the raw ingredients are being cooked, the essences will dripped down from the holes in the lid into the congee that is being cooked below. A noticeable different compared to Rong Fu Ji is that Steamed Box charges 3 times more for the congee and added chicken stock for flavouring.

IMG_8001ed

IMG_8007ed

Once the lid is placed over the steam pot, you can start placing your ingredients on to the lid to cook the food. The steaming time of the different ingredients are determined by the colour of the plates. I find this operationally smarter than Rong Fu Ji. This will relief the staff from explaining to each customers how long to cook each ingredients as it is self-explanatory.

IMG_8013ed

We tried a variety of ingredients on the menu such as the Baramundi ($15), Bamboo Clam ($18), Clams ($13), Cray Fish, Scallops ($18), Sweet Potato ($6), Pumpkin ($5), Assorted Mushroom ($8.50), Dou Miao ($5) and Wawa ($6).

IMG_8018ed

After trying both Steam Box and Rong Fu Ji, I still find that steam pot is best for seafood to appreciate the natural sweetness of them. For those that have a palate for heavy and rich flavours, you will find that the vegetables and mushrooms when steamed is rather bland in taste. This is more for those healthy eater without all the seasonings. Root vegetables fare better because of the natural sweetness.

IMG_8009ed

Singaporean likes varieties. So like Rong Fu Ji, Steam Box also offers meat on their menu such as Premium Prime Short Rib ($11.50/$23), Marinated Ginger Chicken Thigh with Wolfberry ($4.50/$9) and Marinated Minced Pork with Premium Salted Fish ($4.50/$9). I would highly recommend to go for the marinated minced pork with premium salted fish.

IMG_8010ed

Another different between Steam Box and Rong Fu Ji is the value for money meat selection at Steam Box. While Rong Fu Ji uses more premium quality cuts and without marination, once again emphasizes on the appreciation of the natural flavour, Steam Box targets the mass local palate that likes rich and heavy flavours.

IMG_8029ed

This is the part where I think Steam Box has an edge over Rong Fu Ji. Steam Box introduces Steamed Dim Sum in the menu. Once again on the two points. Variety and rich in flavoured food. In fact there is a three factor, the fun element.. Diners get to cook their own dim sum. You don't get to experience it elsewhere.

IMG_8026ed

Last but no least, after you have finished cooking and eating all the raw ingredients. Turn off the heat and lifted the lid to unveil a pot of congee underneath. You can top it with some spring onions and fried shallots to wrap up the meal with a bowl of comforting steamed congee.

IMG_8030ed

After having tried both steam pot concept, the feeling I have is that Steam Box is more for the masses with their choices of variety. It also tweaked the concept to include marinated and seasoned ingredients to suit the local palate. Rong Fu Ji is still more authentic in the sense that they still insist on the appreciation of the natural flavour, healthy eating with the use of premium ingredients. While the business concept and target customer base is slightly different, I think Steam Box has an edge over Rong Fu Ju at the moment.

New Lucky Claypot Rice @ Holland Drive Food Centre - Charocal Cooked Claypot Rice, Up To An Hour Wait

IMG_7710ed

Fans of claypot rice will know of New Lucky Claypot Rice at Holland Drive Food Centre. It used to be located at Clementi before moving to its present location. The claypot rice here is still cooked the traditional way from the raw rice grains over charcoal fire. Hence the wait can be as long as an hour or more if you did not make prior reservation. Scroll down to the end of the article to know how to beat the queue, if you do not want to wait an hour for your food.

IMG_7713ed
Claypot Rice 4.2/5

The Claypot Rice ($10) comes with very little chicken meat, so we usually ask to add more chicken meat at an extra cost of $5. The claypot rice is served bland with a bottle of oil and dark sweet sauce. Customers can add the amount of oil and dark sweet sauce to their own preference.

IMG_7715ed
Claypot Rice 4.2/5

So why to people come afar to savour their claypot rice? First of all, the outer layer of the claypot rice is cooked to a aromatic charred crispy crust while the rest are fluffy and moist. The sausages and salted fish further enhanced the flavur of the fragrant rice. Most importantly, the chicken cooked under the high intense charcoal heat is still juicy and tender.

IMG_7717ed
Vegetable 3/5

IMG_7722ed
Watercress Soup 3.5/5

Having the claypot rice only can be quite boring. Knowing that Singaporean likes variety, the stall also sells Vegetables and Soup. They are not the best but I am content for the variety and it only costs me an additional $8 for both the vegetable and soup.

IMG_0557ed

As promise, here is the tip to eat at New Lucky Claypot Rice. Never walk in or be prepared to wait for at least an hour. The best thing is to call and place your order before turning up. The stall will give you a queue number over the phone and a rough estimated time when the food will be ready. Make you way down at the appointed time and you will find your claypot rice will be served to you in minutes. Just walk up to the staff and tell them your queue number. Oh remember to tell the person over the phone that you want to add chicken meat.

Chow Fun Restaurant & Bar @ The Grandstand (Turf City) - Modern Noodle Small Plates Bar with 18 Asian and Western Noodle Dishes

IMG_7959ed

Another new restaurant and concept has recently opened at The Grandstand which is just diagonally opposite Omakase Burger. Chow Fun Restaurant & Bar is a modern noodle small plates bar that offers over 18 Asian and Western inspired noodle small plates, moreish snacks and all day happy hour. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of noodles on the menu, it is like a mini Noodle Olympic where noodle dishes inspired from various countries and cuisines are gathered together.

IMG_7967ed
Fish Roe Fishball 3/5

We started our dinner at Chow Fun with some snacks. The Fish Roe Fishball ($6.90) comes with a fish roes and mayo stuffing in it. Do be careful while having it as the mixture may oozed out. I won't really call it a fishball as the flour ratio is way more than the fish meat. Nevertheless, many will enjoy the popping surprises of the fish roes in it.

IMG_7966ed
Mom's White Radish Cake 3/5

The Mom's White Radish Cake ($5.90) did not taste as good as it looks. The pan fried radish cake was rather light on the palate. It lacked the depth and fragrant from the Chinese sausages, dried shrimp and shallots. Even the dried shrimp sambal was rather mild, lacking the knockout punch.

IMG_7968ed
Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Skin 3.5/5

It was rather interesting to find the Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Skin on the menu. Love the salted egg yolk sauce. If the chicken skin could be crispier than that will be perfect.

IMG_7970ed
Potato, Bonito and Cheese Pancake 4/5

The Potato, Bonito and Cheese Pancake ($5.90) is a rather interesting dish which resembles a cross between a Swiss rosti and Japanese Okonomiyaki. A layer of thinly sliced potato rest beneath the pile of melted cheeses (Mozzarela, mature Cheddar and Granna Padano), topped with bonito flakes and spring onions. This is addictive combination that will be enjoyed by both young and old.

IMG_7971ed
Ginger and Scallion Noodle 3.8/5

The noodle small plates concept is sort of like Thai boat noodles but at Chow Fun you get to have a choice between hot and chilled noodles dishes with a gamut of different types of noodles and cooking styles. We started with the Ginger and Scallion Noodle ($2.90) which is served chilled. The cold noodles are tossed in a mixture of spring onions, ginger, vinegar, sesame oil and mirin. A very refreshing and healthy dish.

IMG_7972ed
Kung Fu Dashi Broth Noodle 4.2/5 and Tom Yum Cream Noodle 3/5

One of my favourite noodle dishes is the Kung Fu Dashi Broth Noodle ($2.90) which reminds me of a tasty bowl of home cooked fried vermicelli. It may looked simple but the fried vermicelli cloaked in a savoury dashi broth is packed full of flavours.

The Tom Yum Cream Udon ($2.90) is cooked in a spicy tom yum paste with sauteed mushrooms, tart cherry tomatoes, prawns and topped with crispy chicken skin. A modern fusion of Thai flavour and Japanese noodle. The spicy and sour combination on top of the chewy bite of the udon would be well received if not for the fact that the kitchen is a bit heavy on the salt.

IMG_7973ed
Wagyu Bolognese Pasta 3.5/5 and Pork Belly Bibim Guksu 4.5/5

Another homely and comforting noodle dish on the menu is the Wagyu Bolognese Pasta ($2.90). The ground wagyu beef is slowed cooked for 12 hours together in a hearty tomato sauce that complement the perfectly cooked spaghetti.

The traditional Korean bibim guksu is a cold noodle dish but Chow Fun's piquant rendition of Pork Belly Bibum Guksu ($2.90) is served warm with gochujang stirred into the rice noodles with house made pickled radish with coriander seeds, and crowned with unctuous silvers of sateed soy ginger glazed pork belly. This is the other favourite of mine.

IMG_7975ed
Pineapple Fried Noodle 2.8/5

IMG_7978ed
Bak Kut Teh Noodle 3/5

The Pineapple Noodle ($2.90) is akin to the Malaysian Hokkien Mee. While the dark sweet sauce and mirin is quite delectable, the texture of the noodle was kind of rubbery which I did not enjoy.

The only soup dish we tried is the Bak Kut Teh Noodle ($2.90). Flavourful broth but once again on the salty side.

IMG_7976ed
Pink Shrimp Pasta 4.5/5 and Wild Mushroom & Truffle Pasta 4.2/5

If you have limited stomach space to try all the 18 Asian and Western inspired noodle dishes, then I would recommend spending your dollar on the Pink Shrimp Pasta ($2.90) and Wild Mushroom & Truffle Pasta ($2.90). The sauce of the pink shrimp pasta stood out for me. It is prepared by cooking shrimp in white wine and tomato and then blended with cream, resulting in a robust and briny seafood flavour that goes very well with the penne pasta.

Lychee Granita and Crystal Jelly 3/5

Besides the snacks and noodles, Chow Fun also offers a decent mix of Asian and Western desserts on the menu. The Lychee Granita And Crsytal Jelly ($4.90) is a light and refreshing dessert to wrap up the meal. I thought the granita was a rather bland, it needed a bit more zest to it.

IMG_7980ed
Deep Fried Caramelized Banana Fritter 4/5

I am surprised to find Goreng Pisang at Chow Fun. Oh! I meant Deep Fried Caramelized Banana Fritter ($6.90). Crispy batter coupled with the sweet banana, this is just to addictive to stop at one.

IMG_7982ed
Red Bean, Peanut and Sesame Homemade Tang Yuan 4.2/5

Homemade Tang Yuan ($6.90) in ginger soup is another tradition dessert in the menu. It comes with a trio of Tang Yuan with red bean, peanut and sesame filling. I was actually taken aback that the sesame tang yuan is actually salted. It did bring a little different twist and surprise to the table.

IMG_7986ed
Salted Egg and Chocolate Lava Cake 4/5

How to resist the lava flowing Salted Egg and Chocolate Lava Cake ($8.90). It is a combination that satisfied by internal craving. The cake was rich and moist. Unfortunately I could not really taste the salted egg. This is my second time to come across this combination and in both occasions the chocolate is too overpowering for the presence of the salted egg.

While the concept is try the different Asian and Western noodle dishes, for those that prefer to have a bigger bowl, they are also available in upsized portions from $15.90. However I would encourage you to be adventurous and order a few noodle dishes to try. I would recommend having the Ginger and Scallion Noodle, Kung Fu Dashi Broth Noodle, Pork Belly Bibum Guksu,  Pink Shrimp Pasta and Wild Mushroom & Truffle Pasta

Gyoza Ya @ ION Orchard - Gyoza Specialist with Affordable Asian Tapas & Sake

Visited Gyoza Ya at Ion Orchard lately, almost 2 years after I patronised their very first outlet at Robinsons. They started off with rather basic gyozas, such as pork/prawns pan fried or boiled, with side dishes created to go with their beers and sake. Till date, the range has been expanded to excite our ever restless palates. As a gyoza specialty outlet, each outlet has its respective star. Curry Chicken for Paragon's, Cheese for Robinson's and Mochi Mochi Ebi for Ion's.

Pan-fried Gyoza with Pork and Octopus 3.8/5

As my friend was alleged to prawns, we skipped Ion's specialty and went for their latest creation Yaki Takoyaki Gyoza ($7.80 for 5 pc). I quite like the extra crunch and chewiness lent from the tako bits. They are also less meaty compared to the full pork gyoza, which I also find more enjoyable.

20160520_131155_HDR
Pan-fried Gyoza with Pork, Pork and Mentaiko 3.5/5

For a much stimulating flavour, you can try their Yaki Mentaiko Gyoza ($8.80 for 5 pc). It is rather heavy, hence you may just stop at 2 or 3.

20160520_130334_HDR
Boiled Mixed Vegetables Gyoza with Special Vinegar Sauce 3.8/5

For something lighter, Gyoza with Mixed Vegetables may be a good option. Each variety comes in either pan fried or boiled version, and I personally much prefer their pan fried for the crispier texture. Their Shichimi-su Gyoza ($6.30 for 5pc) is an exception though, which is boiled and glazed with their special vinegar sauce. The base of the vinegar was made 2 years ago, and like a stock made of heirloom recipe, the vinegar gets richer and richer with new batches added on to it over time. Psychologically perhaps, this bowl of boiled dumplings tells a much more flavourful story than it would otherwise have told.

20160520_130550_HDR
Chilled Cucumber with Miso Dressing

Gyoza Ya has left an impression in me not because of their chunky, meaty gyoza, but their side dishes. I'm glad that Morokyu ($3.80) is still on the menu. It wouldn't have worked if the miso dressing is simply a dollop of thin miso paste. Each barley grain was pumped with miso, and together, they spread the miso flavour evenly over each cucumber cube. Hence, I didn't get that overpowering saltiness should miso paste has been used.

20160520_130435_HDR
Roasted Broccoli with Japanese Mixed Spices 4/5

The owner recommended their new item, which is also his favourite as well - Aburi Broccoli ($4.80), and it has become mine too. Interestingly, it was conceived by accident, when the owner decided not to waste a charred broccoli which had accidentally dropped onto their grill. Slightly charred and lightly seasoned to taste, the sweetness and flavour of each stalk were intensified. My last wonderful experience with roasted vegetables was at Humpback, with their brussels sprout when I had 3 plates of that. I had 2 of this, and I believe a few more plates is not a problem at all.

20160520_125955_HDR
Special Pork Base Soup with Ramen and Braised Pork 3.5/5

Although they are not a ramen specialty, their Tonkotsu Ramen ($6.80) is made with their very own pork bones broth, which is prepared in their central kitchen housed in Japan. I love its richness and milkiness, albeit being a little too salty for me. Their add-on egg ($1.50/pc) was also superb.

20160520_130644_HDR
Japanese Garlic Fried Rice 4/5

They retrained a Chinese Chef to manage their Ninniku Yaki Meshi ($5.80) station and that smiley uncle only cooks this. With the 'wok hei' taste and texture, this bowl of fragrant Japanese garlic fried rice does reflect his years of experience in wok and rice dishes. I kind of miss their seafood fried rice, which is not available at this outlet as the waiting time proves to be too much for the crowd here.

20160520_143847_HDR
Sake

Regulars come to Gyoza Ya for their hearty, affordable tapas-style food, beers and sakes. And after much waiting, their home brewed sakes are finally ready to be harvested! Yuzu and Green Tea Sake ($18.00 each) were available during my visit, and if you are lucky, there might be a couple more during your visit. For a more conducive drinking environment, Robinsons' may be a much better option.

Nyonya Curry Puff Cafe @ Bukit Batok East Ave 2 - One Of The Best Chicken Curry Puff I Have Eaten

IMG_0373ed

My curiosity brought me to the neighbourhood of Bukit Batok East Ave 2 after a reader dropped me a message informing of a very good curry puff place there. Nyonya Curry Puff Cafe is not actually a sit down cafe, it is more of a takeaway kiosk selling a variety of puffs, snacks and light bites.

IMG_7631ed
Chicken Curry Puff 4.2/5

The deep fried Chicken Curry Puff ($1.30/pc) comes with a crispy and flaky pastry skin. A bite into it, my eyes brighten up. The inside of the puff comes with chicken, potato, egg stuffing perfumed by the spices which you can taste in Indian curry. I really enjoyed this.

IMG_7635ed
Ku Cai Mushroom Puff 4.2/5

For vegetarian, there is the Ku Cai Mushroom Puff. This is something new, I have never heard or seen it elsewhere. I am a fan of ku cai and with the additional of mushroom and onion, the flavour is given a further lift. I like the creation. Even non vegetarian should give it a try.

IMG_7634ed

Besides the two puffs that I tried. the cafe offers a wide varieties of creation. They also sells Sardine Puff, Lemon Tuna Puff, Mutton Curry Puff, Black Pepper Puff, Chicken Cheese Puff and Durian Puff. Some interesting item such as lemon tuna, chicken cheese and durian caught my attention. I already planning to come back and try them.

Soi 19 Wanton Mee @ Jurong East - Popular Thai Wanton Mee Opens 2nd Outlet In The West

IMG_1022

The popular Soi 19 Wanton Mee has opened a second outlet at Jurong East. Those staying in the West like me, need not travel the distance to Ang Mo Kio and queue for at least an hour for the wanton mee any more. The new outlet is located inside BGAIN 130 Eating House just beside Jurong CPF building.

IMG_8052ed
Regular Bowl Thai Wanton Noodle 4.2/5

There was no queue during my visit. Probably not many people is aware of their new outlet yet. After browsing through the menu, I decided to just go for the Thai Wanton Noodle regular bowl ($3.50). It also comes in large bowl ($5) and jumbo size ($6). I regretted not upsizing as the portion of the regular bowl is rather little. I was not full after having it.

IMG_8060ed
Regular Bowl Thai Wanton Noodle 4.2/5

The Thai style wanton mee does not come with a sauce. It only comes with the egg noodle, fried wanton, vegetables, char siew and a bowl of soup with wanton. Although the wanton noodle does not come with a sauce, you are free to help yourself to the condiments such as fish sauce, chilli flakes, sugar and green chilli, the way the local Thai likes to have their noodles.

IMG_8057ed

After trying Soi 19 Wanton Mee, I understand why it is so popular. The star has to be the springy egg noodles that is cooked to al dente. Even though there is no sauce or gravy, the fragrance and texture of the egg noodle coupled with the pork lard is sufficient to elevate the whole enjoyment. I prefer to add a bit of the fish sauce and chilli flakes to give the flavour a further lift. While the dumpling is meaty, I find the wanton skin on the thick side and lacks the robustness of a good wanton filling.

IMG_8054ed

Overall I would recommend trying Soi 19 Wanton Mee. Currently not many people knows about its second outlet yet, so do find them to go and try it before the queue starts forming. I also noticed that the stall has introduced a new black sauce wanton mee on their menu. I have yet to try it but do let me know how you find it, if you have tried it.

Chef Pang of Antoinette is in a roll after the introduction of La Croissainterie Series and Baked Cheese Tart. From now to end July 2016, Chef Pang rolls out 22 matcha items creating the ultimate experience for matcha lovers, satisfying their fetish for the green tea powder from Nishio, Japan. Basically the 22 matcha are break into 5 main categories, namely Bakery/Confectionery, Hot Items, Cakes/Macarons, Chocolat and Beverages.

IMG_8104ed
Matcha Almond Shortbread 4/5

From the Bakery/Confectionery, we have 7 creations. They are namely Matcha Financier ($2.50), Match Cake ($3), Matcha Orange Almond Tuile ($9), Matcha Almond Shortbread ($2.50), Matcha Croissant ($6) and Matcha Milk Jam ($9).

Matcha Milk Jam on Toast 4.2/5

IMG_8107ed
Matcha Croquant 3.5/5

IMG_8114ed
Matcha Macarons, Matcha Financier, Matcha Cake 3.8/5

Among the matcha creations from the confectionery, my favourite has to the Matcha Milk Jam and the best way to enjoy it is to spread it on toast. The sweetness from the jam reminds me of condense milk with a slight hint of the matcha flavour. Following that I would probably go for the Match Financier, a classic French almond tea cake for its

IMG_8123ed
Matcha Pancake 3.5/5

The Hot Item probably is the highlight of the Fetish Matcha. It features dishes such as the Matcha Pasta ($26), Matcha Crepe ($18), Matcha French Toast ($16) and Matcha Pancake ($15).

IMG_8119ed
Matcha Pasta 3.5/5

The Matcha Pasta is an unexpected creation from Antoinette. The matcha infused pasta is tossed in a truffle paste and topped with salted kombu and sakura ebi. Cooked to al dente, it comes with a delectable bite. It does not have the powdery matcha taste but beautifully perfumed by the truffle and sakura ebi.

IMG_8127ed
Matcha Crepe 4/5

IMG_8130ed
Matcha French Toast 4.2/5

The Matcha Crepe and French Toast are another two creations that will delight many. The Match Crepe paired with French chestnut cream and vanilla Chantilly is thin and soft, with a mochi like texture. The French Toast, using brioche bread is paired with vanilla Chantilly and maple syrup for a pillowy and sweet finish.

IMG_8106ed
Yucha 4/5

From the Cakes/Macarons section, Chef Pang has created the Yucha ($8/$75), Matcha Strawberry Shortcake ($9/$55) and Matcha Pop ($9.50)

IMG_8095ed
Matcha Strawberry Shortcake 4/5

The Yucha is a matcha butter cake layered with matcha creme mousseline and yuzu curd which is sugar free. The Matcha Strawberry Shortcake is a light matcha sponge cake with kirsch layered with fresh strawberries and creme Chantilly. Both cakes are light and moist.

IMG_8110ed
Matcha Pop 4.5/5

However my favourite from the cake section is Magnum look alike Match Pop, made up of matcha sponge with kirsch, layered with matcha ganache, almond nougatine, enrobed with milk chocolate and roasted almond nib

IMG_8135ed
Matcha Chocolate Rice Crispies, Matcha Swiss Rocks, Matcha Truffle and Yucha 4/5

The Chocolat section offers additive snacks such as the Matcha Chocolate Rice Crispies with Marron Glace, Matcha Swiss Rocks, Matcha Truffle and Yucha. If it is possible, I would have love to stock up my home with the Matcha Swiss Rocks, lightly caramelized almond silvers enrobed in matcha chocolate.

IMG_8108ed
Matcha Soda 4/5

Lastly the Beverages section which offers Matcha Soda ($22), Matcha Yuzu Lychee Iced Tea ($12.50) and Matcha Latte ($22). The first two drinks are served cold and refreshing. The Matcha Latte is kind of spectacular. The cup of matcha latte is served below a raining cloud of cotton candy together with almond cookie, matcha truffle and matcha financier.

IMG_8146ed
Matcha Latte 4.2/5

Can't handle all 22 items? Why not gather 4 people and indulge in the La Carte Fetish Matcha ($190++) where your friends and you can get to try all 22 matcha items on the menu. Kindly note that some items will be for sharing in the La Carte Fetish Matcha and this is only available at Penhas outlet. If you are a matcha lover, don't miss it as it is only available until end of July 2016.

Xing Ji Wanton Noodle @ Tampines Round Market & Food Centre - Go For the Chicken Feet Noodle Instead

IMG_7186ed

During my visit to Tampines Round Market & Food Centre to check out Xing Yun Kway Chap, I noticed there is a constant long queue at Xing Ji Wanton Noodle. Being a foodie, I could not resist my curiosity to join the queue to find out for myself why the wanton mee stall attracts the snaking queue.

IMG_7195ed
Wanton Mee 2.8/5

The Wanton Mee ($3) comes with slices of char siew, two wanton and a few strand of vegetables. The char siew is only passable lacking the carmalized charred. Overall the wanton mee lacks the depth to be considered as one of best.

IMG_7193ed
Chicken Feet Noodle 4.2/5

IMG_7188ed
Chicken Feet Noodle 4.2/5

While I find the wanton mee lacklustre, the Chicken Feet Noodle ($4) is actually worthy trying. Using the same noodle as the wanton mee, I find it more suitable to soak up the braised gravy of the chicken feet noodle. The chicken feet is also well executed with its crispy skin and braised to tender.

IMG_9894ed

Conclusion I do not think it is worth queuing up for the wanton mee. However I feel the chicken feet noodle is worthy a try if you happen to be in the area.

Jit It Thai San Popiah (日益太山薄饼) @ Clementi Avenue 3 - Garlicky and Spicy Shiokness Popiah

It has been a long while since I lasted visited one of my favourite Popiah stall, Jit It Thai San Popiah (日益太山薄饼) at Clementi. It is good to know that the old auntie is still in the pink of health, running the stall and busy rolling her popiah to serve the long snaking queue.

IMG_3624ed
Popiah 4/5

What I like about the Popiah ($1.50/pc) here is the shiok garlicky taste and its kick ass chilli, that is wrapped in a thin popiah skin. I am glad that the standard is there. To be frank, the stall auntie is already quite old. I really wonder how long can she continue doing this day in day out.

IMG_3625ed
Popiah 4/5

The delectable popiah here is stuffed with turnips, beansprouts, hard boiled eggs and peanuts. While the turnips may lack the depth and richness, it is made up by the garlick and chilli shiokness with the fragrant egg and peanuts rounding off the flavours.

IMG_3629ed

Do let me remind you again to keep your order simple. The auntie can be quite grouchy at times if you are not clear with your order. We can't blame her as age has also caught up with her. So do pardon her temper.
