Oz Specialty Coffee @ Thomson V Two (Upper Thomson)

Having been checking out the cafe scene in Thomson area, my cafe hopping has brought me to One Man Coffee, November 8, Yahava KoffeeWorks and today we are going to drop by Oz Specialty Coffee at Sin Ming Road just off Upper Thomson Road.

IMG_2947ed

I have heard that Oz Specality Coffee served a pretty awesome cup of coffee so I made my way on one weekday to check out the place. During my visit, the cafe was serving two types of coffee beans, common man coffee roaster or pacamara house blend.

IMG_2944ed
Caffe Latte 4.2/5

After much consideration and the patient barista for explaining the different characteristic of the coffee beans, I decided to go for the Common Man Coffee Roaster beans for my cup of Caffe Latte ($4.50/$5.50)When the barista told me that the pacamara house blend is on the acidity side, it was quite an easy choice for me as I don't like coffee that is acidic. I am glad with my choice as the coffee has a nice buttery and nutty taste.

Caffe Latte 4.2/5

The cafe is pretty small with about 5 indoor wall facing seats with about 5 to 6 outdoors tables along the corridor. Although there is a staircase in the cafe leading to the second level, it is used as storage place. Even thought it is small, it is a cozy little place with good coffee. I have read that their food items are pretty good too. I did not try them during my visit as I had another appointment after that. I was just stopping by to try their coffee. Oz Specialty Coffee also provides free Wifi too.

IMG_2862ed

Is traditional kueh a part of history in Singapore? Hopefully not but I believe all things need to progress and evolved to keep up with the present. Take for example Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery runs by the 2nd generation is using social media to bring awareness to the new and younger generation about their traditional nonya kueh. It is good to preserve the tradition but the world is changing and one must adjust to fit into the new world, be it in the food or business model. Especially in food, people's palate changes with time and if you don't do something, you will just be a chapter of the history book.

IMG_2860ed

Today I am bring you to Bukit Merah to check out this popular traditional kueh shop with more than 30 years of history. Poh Cheu (宝洲) started selling their homemade kueh as a mobile hawker back in the dates at Boon Lay before moving to Jalan Kayu, Bedok and now at Bukit Merah. Now in its third generation, Poh Cheu still insist in hand making their kuehs instead of machine.

IMG_2855ed
Ang Ku Kueh 4/5

While preserving the tradition of hand making their kueh to ensure of the utmost quality, Poh Cheu has also introduced new flavours for the Ang Ku Kueh ($0.80 each) to satisfy the new generation. Besides the traditional green bean and peanut flavours, there are also salted bean, green tea, mango, red bean, coconut, black sesame, pineapple and yam. The different colour of the traditional ang ku kueh already looked some appetizing. The skin was thin, some what like mochi texture and it was packed full with filling.

IMG_2859ed
Soon Kueh 4.5/5

A delectable snack and my favourite at Poh Cheu is the Soon Kueh ($0.80 each). For a mere eighty cents you get a plump filled soon kueh wrapped under a thin transparent skin. I especially like the crystal like skin that is very palatable but not overshadowing the filling inside, allowing the ingredients inside to be the star. Ku Cai Kueh ($0.80 each) and Bamboo Shoot Kueh ($1) are also available at Poh Cheu.

IMG_2857ed
Rice Cake 4/5

The Rice Cake ($1) is another traditional kueh that is essential in Chinese events especially as a form of offering for prayers and festive occasions. Stuffed with glutinous, mushroom and peanuts, this delightful snack can be eaten steamed or pan fried.

Poh Cheu is extremely busy during the Chinese festive occasions with many people ordering in bulk. It is best to avoid this period if you just want to go there for a morning breakfast or afternoon tea snack. Be warned not to expect the best of customer service as myself was denied having an extra plastic plate so that I can share the kuehs with my friends. The auntie servicing me insist that one plastic plate is for 2 kuehs only. So in the end I have to purchase another piece of kueh to make it even number for the extra plastic plate.

For those that stay in the Northern part of Singapore would be familiar with Sawadee Thai Cuisine which used to be located at Sembawang near the famous Sembawang white beehoon. Sawadee Thai Cuisine has sinced moved from its previous premises to their new home at Bugis along Tan Quee Lan Street in December 2013, just beside the new Bugis downtown line MRT exit.

Betel Leaf Wrap 4/5

IMG_3645ed
Betel Leaf Wrap 4/5

The last time I had the Betel Leaf Wrap ($12/$18) was at the defunct Sweet Salty Spicy. Not many Thai restaurants in Singapore serve this. I am glad that I got to try this street food again at Sawadee Thai Cuisine. To eat just grab a bit of everything with the homemade special sauce and have it like a wrap. You will get a burst of flavours in the mouth as you chew on the betel leaf wrap.

IMG_3648ed
Green Mango Salad 3.5/5

I realized that the Green Mango Salad ($10/$15) served at the Sawadee Thai Cuisine is a bit different to the rest. A check with the kitchen confirmed that they used 2 different types of mangoes for the dish. The ripe one for sweetness and the unripe one for the crunch. While this was good, I like my Thai salad to be rich in the fish sauce and spiciness. The seasoning can be further up a notch.

IMG_3650ed
Thai Rice Crackers Dip 3/5

A delightful starter would be the Thai Rice Crackers Dip ($9/$14) that is served with a rich, savoury creamy chicken dip.

IMG_3653ed
Crab Spring Roll 3.5/5

While the Crab Spring Roll ($10/$15) was very enjoyable with its crispy deep fried exterior, I could not really tasted any crab meat in the filling instead. While it is understandable for cost reason, I still hope the filling mixture would have more crab meat flesh.

IMG_3659ed
Tom Yum Talay 3.8/5

A staple Thai soup dish, the Tom Yum Talay ($10/$15) will whet up your appetite with its spicy and sour characteristic.

IMG_3675ed
Thai Stuffed Chicken Wings 3.5/5

The Thai Stuffed Chicken Wings ($10/$15) was quite flavourful and easy to it as they have been deboned. While it is pretty enjoyable, I still preferred my chicken wings to come with bones.

IMG_3664ed
Thai Style Otah 4.5/5

Served in a traditional clay earthenware, the Thai Style Otah ($15) was one my favourite dishes for the night. The steamed fish paste or mousse has delectable firm and chunky texture that comes with a subtle spiciness.

IMG_3665ed
Olive Rice 4/5

Nowadays I don't go for pineapple rice but olive rice instead whenever I visit a Thai restaurant. I find olive rice is more flavourful than pineapple rice. The Olive Rice ($13/$18) at Sawadee Thai Cuisine is served with chicken and deep fried dried shrimp. The deep fried dried shrimp is quite an interesting combination which goes very well with the olive rice.

IMG_3662ed
Hearty Duck Curry 4.2/5

The red curry of the Hearty Duck Curry ($15/$22) was rich and creamy. It goes very well with a plate of rice. The use of lychee and pineapple gave the dish a fruity sweet balance which worked excellently with the roasted duck.

IMG_3667ed
Spicy Steamed Fish 4.2/5

I have always enjoy having Thai Spicy Steamed Fish ($28). The combination of the sweet, sour and spicy which are the fundamental of Thai cuisine fully accentuated the fresh and moist fish.

IMG_3673ed
Stir Fried Fish Maw with Beansprouts 4.8/5

The simplicity of the dish coupled with an element of surprise in terms of textures and flavours blown everyone on the table away. The Stir Fried Fish Maw with Beansprouts ($12/$18) comes with soft and flavourful fish maw coated beautifully by a layer of eggs, stir fried with beansprouts. It was so good that I kept going back for more. I even exclaimed that this can be a healthy version of orh luak.

IMG_3678ed
Durian with Glutinous Rice 4.5/5

IMG_3680ed
Mango with Glutinous Rice 3.8/5

Wrapping up the dinner, we have the Durian Glutinous Rice ($5) and Mango Glutinous Rice ($6). Being a durian lover, my vote went to durian glutinous rice. The aromatci durian and sticky glutinous rice drizzled with coconut milk worked beautifully on the palate. For the mango glutinous rice, the purple glutinous rice stood out with its sweetness that is so good that I can have it on its own. I only wish there could be more coconut milk.

Moving to the new premises at Bugis, Sawadee Thai Cuisine has also gone upscale with its centralized location. Prices are a bit steeper compare to neighbourhood Thai restaurant. Considering the foreign working crowd in the vicinity and catering more for family dining, the Thai food at Sawadee Thai Cuisine is not as spicy and bold in flavours. Nevertheless, just asked for the kitchen not to hold back in the seasoning if you prefer a more authentic taste of Thailand.

IMG_2903ed

If you are looking for a plate of good fried hokkien mee at ABC Brickworks Food Centre, my recommendation would be this stall hidden right at the corner of the food centre. Havelock Road Blk 50 Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee is run by an old couple with the 70 plus years old uncle helming the wok. He has over 50 years of experience woking up plate after plate of delicious fried hokkien mee since the day at the old premises at block 50 Havelock Road.

IMG_2902ed
Fried Hokkien Mee 4/5

The plate of Fried Hokkien Mee ($3.50/$4/$5) comes with slices of squid, pork belly and a fee pieces of prawn. The stall uses almost fifty fifty proportion of yellow noodles and beehoon. The fried hokkien mee is fried in a stock mixture of pork bone, pig skin and prawn head for the aromatic flavour, that is well simmered and absorbed by the noodles.

IMG_2901ed
Fried Hokkien Mee 4/5

The plate of fried hokkien mee is neither too wet or dry which is well balanced. With a squeeze of the lime plus the chilli sauce, this further accentuate the enjoyment to the fullest. The fried hokkien mee may not be the best but definitely among the better ones. My favourite is still Xiao Di at Serangoon North.

After the discovery of Saigon Vietnamese Delicacy at Geyland Road, I met up with Chenyze and Bee Bee to check out another Vietnamese restaurant just across the road in SEN Restaurant and Bar. Chenyze has been telling me about this place and I was looking forward to find more from her recommendation.

IMG_2921ed
Grilled Shrimp Surimi 4/5

We started off with the Grilled Shrimp Surimi ($7.90). Hailing from Hue region, the grilled shrimp surimi is wrapped around a sugarcane stick. A yummy starter to kick start the lunch. One can actually suck on the sugarcane stick to cleanse the palate.

IMG_2926ed
Grilled Pork Rice Vermicelli Dry 4/5

For Vietnamese noodle dish, patrons usually go for the Pho but Vietnamese dry rice vermicelli is also quite popular too. The Grilled Pork Rice Vermicelli Dry ($12.90) comes with a mixture of fried spring rolls, fresh vegetables, grilled pork with rice vermicelli. To eat, pour the sauce and mix well to enjoy the smooth and silky rice vermicelli in a mix of sweet, sour and spicy.

IMG_2929ed
Special Mixed Beef Noodle 4.2/5

A must try at SEN restaurant is their Special Mixed Beef Noodle ($14.90). Served with rice noodle in a robust beef broth and brewed with the finest Vietnamese spices. The Pho Bo is served with tender sliced beef, beef balls, beef brisket and a side garnish of Asian basil, long parsley, bean sprouts, lime, chilli sauce and black bean sauce. The noodle was smooth and silky, the broth was robust and tasty, it was a great bowl of pho that is both comforting and hearty.

IMG_2933ed
Vietnamese Sandwiches 3/5

Vietnamese Sandwich or Banh Mi is another staple Vietnamese cuisine. Three different types of banh mi are served here. Chicken ($7.90), Mixed Ham ($7.90) and BBQ Pork ($8.20). The French influenced baguette sandwich is completed with fries and salad which is quite an substantial meal. While I applauded the flavourful and well marinated bbq pork, the baguette was a let down for me. It was hopefully for something that is more toasty and filled with more salads.

IMG_2935ed
Tofu Pasted Duck Soup 4/5

The Tofu Pasted Duck Soup ($12.90) caught my attention as it is something unique. A family recipe inherited by the chef from her grandfather, this is a rare dish even in Vietnam. The duck was cooked to a nice tender soft. The soup with homemade tofu paste served with silky rice vermicelli has a complex flavour that is somewhat rich, sweet and comes with hint of sourness that is very delectable.

IMG_2920ed

Overall I have enjoyed the food at SEN restaurant. The restaurant is pretty hard to be spotted from the outside due to its dark exterior. However once you step inside, a warm and pretty interior welcomes. SEN restaurant also has pretty decent lunch set offer at $14.90 that comes with 2 courses and a drink.

Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies (老半斋烧腊) @ Alexandra Village Food Centre

IMG_2864ed

We walked Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies (老半斋烧腊) at Alexandra Village Food Centre and the first thing we noticed is their char siew which is black in colour. The black char siew caught our attention as it is different from the usual reddish type we get from roast stall. The stall owner was still preparing to open the stall when we reached. So as to satisfy our curiosity, we waited patiently for it to be opened.

IMG_2876ed

Once the stall is opened, we ordered a mix platter of Char Siew, Roasted Pork Belly and Roasted Duck which costs us sixteen dollar. A dark and sweet sauce is drenched over the plate of roasts before servicing. However I found the sauce too sweet for my liking drowning the flavour of the roasts.

IMG_2877ed
Char Siew 3.8/5

First of all, let me start with the Char Siew. I like the proportion of lean meat and fats in the char siew that is sold here. The right balance giving it the melted in the mouth texture with a nice bite. The char siew is also well caramelized with the sweetness but lacked the charred aroma. I would avoid the sweet sauce that is ladled over the roasts. I felt that it overpowered and drowned the natural flavour of the char siew.

IMG_2879ed
Roasted Pork Belly 3.5/5 and Roasted Duck 4/5

Having tasted the roasted pork belly at Cross Way Bay, the bar has raised for me. While the roasted pork belly here was good, it did not manage to come into my top list. On the other, I preferred the roasted duck among the roasts instead. It was roasted to a nice exterior crisp on the skin while retaining the succulence of the duck meat.

IMG_2878ed

While the roasts at Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies failed to impress me, I observed during my visit the stall has its own following. The stall does have its own fans who likes their roasts and the rich gooey sauce. Though I do not like the sauce but it does go very well with a plate of plain rice.

Two Wings @ Bukit Merah

IMG_3770ed

Once upon a time there was a grand master who thought his three disciples all his skills and each went their separate way after mastering his skills, making a name for themselves. Like the story of some martial arts, a similar story unfold at the newly opened Two Wings at block 119 Bukit Merah. Stall owner Jeremy has learnt the secret family recipe from the same grand uncle that has taught the original owner of Carona Chicken and an extended family member which owns Victor Fried Chicken Rice. Of course the family member that started off Carona Chicken eventually sold the business which later became a franchise chains and now defunct.

IMG_3786ed
Chicken Wings 4.2/5

If you love chicken wings and especially those deep fried type from Carona Chicken, this is a must try here. The Chicken Wings ($8.50/4pc, $12.50/6pc, $24/12pc) are super crispy and almost not greasy at all. It was told that to cook a good fried chicken wing, the temperature and timing are very important. At Two Wings, the wings are deep fried for nine minutes which will give them that moist and juiciness inside while crispy on the outside. Worth mentioning is the special homemade chilli sauce that is pretty potent. If you can't take spicy stuff, I advice you to skip it as it probably will numb your taste buds deterring you to enjoy the delicious wings.

IMG_3788ed
Finger Food Platter 3/5

IMG_3791ed
Cheese French Fries 3/5

While the main focus of the stall is chicken, Two Wings also sells some finger food and snacks that are suitable to go along with the mains as a side or over a few bottle of beers. The Finger Food Platter ($19.90) ideal for sharing comes with 3 pieces of chicken wings, 9 pieces of chicken strips, 6 pieces of spring rolls, french fries/potato wedges, onion rings, cucumber and carrot with dip. If the finger food platter is too much, the Cheese French Fries ($4.50) drizzled with cheese and mayonnaise is as satisfying.

IMG_3790ed
Chicken Cutlet Main 4.5/5

My first impression of the Chicken Cutlet ($8) which comes with a choice of 2 sides, looked dry. I was not harvesting too much hope until I cut into the piece of chicken which totally changed my opinion. Using chicken thigh, the chicken cutlet was extremely juicy and succulent inside with the signature super crisp exterior. It was like having a chicken chop disguised as a chicken cutlet, wearing a crispy coat over it.

IMG_3782ed
Achar 4/5

I asked the owner why there was no coleslaw on the menu as I needed some acidity after all the richness in the fried chicken seasoning. Interesting his reply was we have Achar hence we are not selling coleslaw. Achar and western food seem like a misfit but breaking from the tradition, it works fine. The achar itself was really good, getting the thumbs up from all of us.

IMG_3794ed
Spring Chicken 4/5

IMG_3796ed
Chicken Parts 4/5

Besides chicken wings and chicken cutlet, different section of the Chicken Parts ($9/2pc, $12/3pc) and Spring Chicken ($9.90 Half / $15.90 Whole) are sold at the stall too. While I enjoyed the juicy chicken and its crispy skin, I thought it was a tad salty if I am to compare it to KFC, Texas and Popeye. I can easily finished 3 pieces from the other fried chicken brands but I did struggle a bit with this. A pride about Two Wings is that the chicken remains crispy even takeaway and consumed hours later. Catherine who brought some of the chicken parts home, confirmed with us later that they have remained crispy.

I have to thank Uncle Smart who has discovered this stall and organized the trip. Carona Chicken may have disappeared from the food & beverage scene in Singapore but Two Wings which uses the same secret family recipe has revived the nostalgic taste under the close supervision of the grand master, I meant the grand uncle who has spent 6 months teaching Jeremy the skill and still drop by the stall periodically to spot check the standard.

After reading an article from Makansutra labeling the stall, Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao at Alexandra Village Food Centre as Dumplings to Die for, I made a note to check out the place in one of the food trail with Ian and Tony. While we were at Uncle Chicken, Niven the stall owner also recommended us to try the xiao long bao.

IMG_2890ed
Xiao Long Bao

Located at the middle section of the hawker centre, a long lunch queue was spotted at the stall. Most of the lunch crowd ordered their la main as well as the various dumplings sold at the stall. Packed in the small space, 4 people were busy servicing the lunch crowd. One looks after the front of the stall taking orders and double up as cashier. Another at the back doing the cooking while the remaining two were tirelessly hand making the dumplings on the spot to ensure a constant supply to meet the order.

IMG_2894ed
Xiao Long Bao 3.8/5

Served in a bamboo basket, the freshly made Xiao Long Bao ($4 for 7pc) is definitely value for money. The pork filling inside the xiao long bao was well marinated and flavourful. The broth was a tad on the sweet side though. I am not sure whether is it because of the lunch crowd, you can tell from the picture that the xiao long bao was a bit on the flat side. It was pretty obvious when picked up by the chopstick, the broth inside seemed to have evaporated.

IMG_2892ed
Xiao Long Bao 3.8/5

Overall the xiao long bao was pretty good and satisfying with the right ratio of filling to skin. However I will not die for these as there are better one. The group also felt that the broth was on the sweet side which we did not enjoy. Saying this, our palate may have caught up with our age as we prefer something lighter in taste.

Goldleaf New Taiwan Porridge Restaurant @ Amoy Street

IMG_3064ed

The older generation may remember Goldleaf New Taiwan Porridge Restaurant which starts at Oxley Rise in the 1970s. Being born after that, my memories of Goldleaf is when they were located at Thomson Plaza. It was great that through social media, I was able find out where they have moved to. Goldleaf New Taiwan Porridge Restaurant is now conveniently located at Amoy Street near the new Telok Ayer MRT station.

IMG_3071ed
Porridge 4.2/5

What I like about Taiwan porridge is it comes with sweet potato? I am not sure how you like to have it but I like to mash it up and mixture it with the grainy porridge so that each mouthful comes with the sweetness of the sweet potato.

IMG_3067ed
Sambal Garlic Sprout 4.2/5

When I saw the Sambal Garlic Sprout ($10) on the menu, I knew I just need to get it. I simply love biting into these crunchy sweet greens.

IMG_3065ed
Tamban Fish with Sesame 4/5

This giant looking ikan bilis is actually Tamban Fish with Sesame ($8). It is deep fried under very crispy that it can be eaten whole. Drizzled with a sweet sauce and topped with sesame, this goes well with the bowl of hot comforting porridge.

IMG_3068ed
Braised Pork with preserved vegetable 4.5/5

The highlight for me is the Braised Pork with preserved vegetable ($16). The braised pork has been cooked so well absorbing all the beautiful flavours until it was tender soft. It literally melted in the mouth. I will definitely order this again in my next visit.

IMG_3072ed
Steamed Pork with Salted Egg Yolk 4.2/5

Another favourite dish of mine is the Steamed Pork with Salted Egg Yolk ($6). The well marinated minced pork with soy sauce and salted egg yolk maybe a hint salty but that is the whole intention to go with the bland porridge.

IMG_3063ed
Oyster Mee Sua 4/5

It has been a while since I last have Oyster Mee Sua ($10) because not many places in Singapore can do it well. Goldleaf serves a great bowl of oyster mee sua with a flavourful and viscous gravy. It was slurping good.

While Taiwan porridge in a way is quite similar with Teochew porridge which is eaten with accompanying selection of dishes, I find that the dishes in Taiwan porridge are more refine. It is good to see that the younger generation has taken over the business and I hope they can continue the tradition and strive for greater height.

For my birthday meal, Maureen brought me to Tamashii Robataya. In return for her birthday celebration, together with Celes we went to Lewin Terrace to celebrate Maureen's birthday. Lewin Terrace is located at Fort Canning Hill in a beautiful black and white bungalow featuring Japanese-French fusion.

IMG_3747ed
Salmon Confit 3.5/5

We went for the five course lunch set menu at $70. The first course was an appetizer of Salmon Confit that comes with a 63 degree Celsius sous vide egg with raspberry sauce. The raspberry sauce lent some sweetness to the light flavour to kick start the lunch.

IMG_3753ed
Foie Gras Terrine 4/5

The Foie Gras Terrine is beautifully paired with a passionfruit, mango sauce to cut through the rich and creaminess of the foie gras. The sheet of coat over the foie gras is potato crisp which is extremely thin and crispy.

IMG_3754ed
Sea Bream Fricassee 4.2/5

There were mix opinions of the Sea Bream Fricassee that comes with wild asparagus, olives and clam jus. While the others felt that the clam jus was too salty, I actually like it. I thought it gave the dish a saltiness contrast similar to Teochew steamed fish in which sour plum or salted vegetables are used.

IMG_3758ed
Lamb Cumin 4.2/5

The star of the lunch has to be the Lamb Cumin served on red and yellow pimento with celery root puree. The presentation may look kind of plain and simple but each component on the plate worked harmoniously together complementing one another. The lamb was extremely tender with lovely flavourful singing in the mouth. For those that is worried about the gaminess, I hardly could taste any in this dish.

IMG_3761ed
Deconstructed Spumoni 3/5

The lunch is to celebrate Maureen's birthday so we got the kitchen to wrote some greetings on the dessert plate. The Deconstructed Spumoni comes in the form of Chardonnay jelly, campari foam and fromage blanc ice cream. It is definitely beautiful but not the type of dessert I would know how to appreciate especially when it comes with alcohol.

IMG_3762ed
White Sesame Blancmange 3.5/5

For dessert, there was a choice of three from the set menu so we got all, one for each person. Besides the deconstructed spumoni, we have the the White Sesame Blancmange. I did not remember tasting any sesame but the coffee flavour was very distinct. The wobbly blancmange paired with the coconut ice cream was good and not too heavy.

IMG_3760ed
Flourless Chocolate Cake 4.2/5

Lastly we have the Flourless Chocolate Cake that is served in custard sauce with a scoop of brown sugar ice cream. This is my favourite dessert among the three we tried. The three components simply came together to make this a sweet ending for a wonderful meal in a beautiful restaurant.

The restaurant is located at the hill behind the central fire station. Surrounded by greenery, it has a quiet and romantic ambience that is perfect for couple. If you are driving, park at the carpark beside Registry of Marriage. Take the flight of stairs at the carpark to the top of the park. Turn left and continue walking . You will locate the white and black bungalow down the path. If not, the shortcut is to take the path beside Singapore Philatelic Museum. Look out for the metal gate beside the museum. There should be a sign of the restaurant which is quite hidden. Walk in and take the flight of stairs direct to the restaurant.

IMG_3048ed

The number of third wave coffee movement cafes popping out in the Singapore's cafe scene is astonishing. There seems to be always a couple of new cafe somewhere out there at some corner in Singapore. Among all these new cafes is Assembly Coffee at Evans Lodge where I have heard many good reviews among the cafe hoppers. So during one of my off day, I made my way down to the cafe to soak up the caffeine aroma in the west side of Singapore.

IMG_3034ed

IMG_3039ed
Caffe Latte 4.2/5

If I remembered correctly, my friend had the Mocha while I have my usually Caffe Latte ($4.50). The latte art as seen in the picture is very skilled and beautiful. I am not a coffee expert but I wonder why my caffe latte had a lot of small bubbles. Putting that aside, the coffee was good using coffee beans from Liberty. It has the right balance which I enjoyed.

IMG_3042ed
Salted Caramel Buttermilk Waffle 4.5/5

Among my friends they all know that I am not a big fan of dessert so I usually took a few bites and that is it. However even I have to admit that the much raved about waffle at Assembly Coffee was really good. The Salted Caramel Buttermilk Waffle ($10.50) excelled all my expectation, be it the flavour or texture it was my perfect waffle. Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, each bite of the waffle with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream was simply heaven.

IMG_3046ed

After visiting Assembly Coffee, I can understand why many have raved about this cafe. I would say it is a cafe with the whole package. Good food, good coffee, nice decoration and both pretty and handsome baristas that make each cup of coffee with dedication.

If you have been to Venice, Bacaros could have been one of the places that you frequent to get a taste of a Venetian life. Lining the streets of Italy, these traditional wine bars provide wide range of nibbles and drinks, both detectable and affordable at the same time.

Welcome to &SONS - an Italian cafeteria by day, a Venetian bar by night. Nestled among the shophouses along Nankin Street, its location couldn't have been more apt to exude the warm and welcoming atmosphere of a bacaro. And indeed, as I walked into this dimly lit bar, I was won over by the welcoming smile of their people and the coziness of the setting. I was delighted to know that most of the staff are Italians, and have received proper training before dedicating their work here. For someone who only know that much about Italian cuisine, I really appreciate having a learned person to guide me through the menu.

IMG_3849ed
Salame Dolce & Piccante 4/5

IMG_3848ed
Black Pork Capocollo 3.5/5

We started off the evening with Salame Dolce & Piccante ($8) and Black Pork Capocollo ($9). These items are fresh off their custom-made curing room, just situated on the right hand side of the bar. If this is the first time that you heard about a place making their own specialty-cured meats and salami, that's because no one has done it before! The salami were flavorful, especially the piccante, with mild taste of spices. Capocollo were extremely soft with its paper thin texture, but slightly too salty for my liking. We sandwiched it with Garlic & Herb Foccacia ($5), which are freshly baked daily. But given their delicate portion and taste, I reckoned that the dough wasn't necessary, especially when I already had a glass of wine on hand.

IMG_3856ed
Paccheri, Iberico Pork & Truffle 3.8/5

IMG_3851ed
Tagliolini, Crab & Nduja 4.5/5

We then moved on to some of the bar's specialities - Paccheri, Iberico Pork & Truffle ($15) and Tagliolini, Crab & Nduja ($9). Both dishes showed skilful cooking, with each dominating different spectrum of tastes. Because of the truffle besciamella, paccheri was mellow and creamy. I really like the pulled pork that was enclaved in the centre, which were really tender. However, the pasta was slightly too doughy for me, similar to that of a lasagne. On the other hand, Tagliolini was bold, flavoursome and extremely additive. The springy pasta was evenly coated with Nduja, the awesome sauce that gives this dish its unique flavour.

IMG_3858ed
Wagyu Beef Tagliata, Salsa Verde 4.5/5

IMG_3860ed
Veal Ossobucco, Orzotto 4.2/5

For the meats, we had Veal Ossobucco, Orzotto ($19) and Wagyu Beef Tagliata, Salsa Verde ($26). I felt that both meats were prepared in ways that brought out their flavours really well. The cross-cut veal shanks braised with the broth were wholesome and hearty. The beef tagliata received a much simpler treatment, only tossed together with some greens hence retaining the juiciness and texture of the thinly sliced beef.

IMG_3861ed
Asparagus, Garlic & Anchovy Sauce 4/5

From the Charcoal Grill section, we had the Asparagus, Garlic & Anchovy Sauce ($9). Though I'm not a fan of anchovy sauce, I loved the charred taste of the asparagus and not to mention the firmness and crunchiness of it.

IMG_3864ed
Baccala Cakes, Sea Urchin Sabayon 4.5/5

Given the generous portion of the food, I was almost filled to the brim when another of their highlights came - Baccala Cakes, Sea Urchin Sabayon ($13) – the &SONS' version. What intrigued me was the colour of the Baccala Cakes - Midnight black. The Chef had actually coated ‘cake’ (stuffed with baccala, béchamel sauce and potatoes) with black squid ink crumbs before deep frying it. What a combustion of tastes and textures in my mouth! The bechemel sauce and the salted cod balanced each other really well. After deep frying, the crumbs formed a thin crispy layer around the mash giving a bite to it. Pairing these cakes with their special sea urchin sauce which was tangy and creamy. It is a must-have.

IMG_3852ed
Bucatini Carbonara 3.5/5

IMG_3867ed
Pork Milanese 3.5/5

In between, we managed to squeeze in 2 items from their Cafeteria by &SONS menu (only available during lunch hour) -Bucatini Carbonara ($8) and Pork Milanese ($9). Although the portion was really generous given that kind of price, as for the taste wise, I would say the ala carte menu is a much better option.

IMG_3870ed
Raspberry Zabaione 3.5/5

IMG_3869ed
Cantucci & Vinsanto 3.8/5

As for the desserts, between our choices - Raspberry Zabaione ($12) and Cantucci & Vinsanto ($12), I thought the latter was more interesting. Dipping the Biscotti into the sweet wine was something different for me. I felt the taste of it would have been better if the biscotti was less sweet, so as to balance the sweetness of the wine.

IMG_3871ed

Before we end the evening, we had the privilege to take a look at their curing room. I'm really glad that &SONS is here in our local scene to deliver authentic Italian offerings. It is certainly not just a façade which I had patronised a few before. With food, wine starting at $8, cocktails starting at $10, and together with the quality of their food and service, I feel it truly lives up to the spirit of a bacaro.

IMG_3876ed

Tras Street is better known for the many wedding shops but the enclave is slowly developing into a foodie hotspot with many new restaurants recently opening in the area. Joining the up and coming foodie hotspot at Tras Street is the months old Buttero helmed by Executive Chef Logan Campbell from Sydney. The casual and fun restaurant features a selection of Italian grub such as pasta, roasts cooked in a rotisserie or coal pit that are easy-eating and perfect to go with an ice cold beer.

IMG_3874ed
Pulled Pork and Waffle Fries 4/5

The Pulled Pork and Waffle Fries ($15) is the ideal bar snack to pair with a glass of beer or wine. Doused in a sinful gooey three cheese sauce, this is finger licking good.

IMG_3875ed
Jesus Juice 4/5

If you are not into beer or wine, I would recommend the house special Jesus Juice which is a granita of pinot noir and coke. A refreshing cocktail with just the right amount of alcohol kick.

IMG_3881ed
Torn Buffalo Mozza and Fried Cornbread 4/5

Whet up the appetite with the Torn Buffalo Mozza and Fried Cornbread ($21) that is paired with heirloom tomato, saba, ligurian olive oil. The syrup from the squeezed grape (saba) and heirloom tomato gave the dish a fruity but yet subtle sweetness that is very appetizing.

IMG_3878ed
Chopped Pork and Zucchini Fritters 4/5

This light bite of Chopped Pork and Zucchini Fritter ($20) is pretty good. There was quite a bit of textures at play here but what I liked most is the charred lime and riocotta cheese which complemented the fritters that accentuated the whole enjoyment.

IMG_3882ed
Handmade Gnocchi 4.2/5

This is definitely one of the better gnocchi I have eaten. The Homemade Gnocchi ($21) with honey, lemon and sage was a bit on the softer side but still came with a nice firmness and bite. I adored the use of sauteed brussel sprouts with the gnocchi. Simply love the crunchiness of the sprouts.

IMG_3884ed
Baked Barley with New Zealand Clams 4.2/5

This is a new item on the menu. The Baked Barley with New Zealand Clams and Belly Bacon is a good alternative to the usual risotto. Each mouthful of the baked barley is bursting with the beautiful flavours of the bacon and clams that is well infused.

IMG_3888ed
The Dirty Steak 4.5/5

The Dirty Steak ($34) got its name because it is cooked directly on hot coals.. The beautiful piece of carolina dry rubbed wagyu flank steak is topped with verde, onion rings and shallot. Succulent and flavourful, this is a must try at Buttero.

IMG_3891ed
Porchetta 3/5

The Porchetta ($32) which is cooked from the rotisserie and topped with braised beans was a tad shy in comparison to the dirty steak. The pork belly was nicely cooked but it was lacked down by the salty crackling skin. A checked with the table confirmed that it was salty. If not it would have been a master piece too.

IMG_3896ed
Milk Chocolate Rosemary Pots 3.8/5

IMG_3893ed
Cannoli 3/5

IMG_3892ed
Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta 4.2/5

Buttero has a small dessert menu which consists of only 4 items. We managed to try three out of the four. The three desserts we tried are Milk Chocolate Rosemary Pots ($12), Cannoli ($12) and Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta ($12). Among the three, my favourite is the Panna Cotta. The combination of strawberries and passionfruit was a perfect marriage that will leave one wanting to go back for more. The milk chocolate rosemary pots was pretty good too but it seems like it was not served at the right temperature for ultimate indulgence.

Overall Buttero has given me a good experience with good food. However I could not really come to term of the casual dining concept and the pricing of the dishes. A diner for two may rock up to about $80 that is excluding drinks. So just bear in mind if you are on a tight budget.

The speed in the number of cafes opening in Singapore is kind of scary which is almost impossible to keep up. Singapore in a way is turning into a little Melbourne will cafes opening up at different corners of Singapore around the island. After my trip to Two Wings a couple of weeks back, I decided to make my way down The Bakery Chef at Bukit Merah Central nearby.

IMG_3800ed
Caffe Latte 4/5

As usual, I had my cup of Caffe Latte ($4). For just four dollars, this is one of the cheapest among the cafes I have visited. Using coffee beans from Highlander, this cup of coffee was just right for my liking. It comes with a nice body, smooth and not too acidic.

IMG_3803ed
Red Velvet Cheese Cake 4.5/5

Most of the cafes sourced their bakes from suppliers but you will be guaranteed fresh bakes from the open concept kitchen daily with a great view and smell of butter in the air. I have tried a couple of red velvet cakes but I have to say the Red Velvet Cheese Cake ($5.80) at The Bakery Chef has impressed me most. It was light, moist and balanced. One of those rare occasions that I would go back for more.

IMG_3805ed
Rainbow Cake 4.2/5

The other popular cake at The Bakery Chef is their Rainbow Cake ($5.80). Actually this is my first time having a rainbow cake. I am glad that my first time is lost to something that was good and memorable. The rainbow cake here is really very soft and light.

IMG_3808ed

Great coffee and great bakes with a nice cozy ambience, The Bakery Chef is definitely a worthy chill out place for a cup of coffee and some cakes.

I have heard about Cake Spade and their cakes for quite sometimes but I never get to visit the place. Although I have walked passed the cafe numerous time but I have never stepped in because it is always crowded. While running some errands around the vicinity during one weekday afternoon, I noticed the cafe was empty so I took the opportunity to try a couple of their cakes.

IMG_3056ed
Strawberry Tofu Cheesecake 3/5

Cake Spade is known for their tofu cheesecake so I just have to give it a tried. I got the Strawberry Tofu Cheesecake ($5.90). It was really light and the digestive biscuit crust at the bottom gave it a nice textural enjoyment. While it is nice, I have problem associating it to a cake. The whole thing just did not feel right. It did not feel like I am having a cake at all.

IMG_3058ed
Dark Chocolate Banana 3.5/5

I actually preferred the Dark Chocolate Banana ($6.20) over the tofu cheesecake. It tasted more real and what we call a cake. The dark chocolate banana cheese cake itself was rich, flavourful and moisture.

IMG_3055ed

After trying the cakes at Cake Spade, I have reservation about the cakes at Cake Spade. Maybe I did not pick the right one to try or my palate is really different from the majority. Like I mentioned earlier, I am very puzzled by the tofu cheesecake. Even though it was light and in a way unique, it is not a cake in my opinion.

I was quite surprise to know that L'Espresso is established as early as 1968. L'Espresso is well known for its elegant teatime pursuits, especially their English Afternoon Tea buffet with a dazzling assortment of dainty sandwiches, salads, savouries, pastries, desserts, chocolate fountain and of course English traditional English scones.

IMG_3953ed

New to the Afternoon Tea buffet is the antipasti such as the German Black Forest ham and Rosette salami. There is even Duck Rillette to go with the fresh bread.

IMG_3942ed

The dainty sandwiches and wraps were really good. My favourite was the wrap and foie gras. I could easily have a couple of these in one serving.

IMG_3948ed

Yes known for their scones this is not to be missed. There were three different types of scones in my visit. I decided to give the blueberry scone a try. What is even more appealing is the variety of condiments to go with the scones. I took a couple of jams but what I adore most is the fresh raspberry condiments.

IMG_3951ed

There are even fried food in the Afternoon Tea buffet spread. Fried food is a favourite among Singaporean and children which definitely is a welcome addition to afternoon tea. A must try is the chicken karaage which was really delicious.

IMG_3954ed

There are even more hot food in the buffet spread such as the smoked salmon with herbs and breadcrumbs crust, and braised kurobuta pork with hungarian sweet paprika and brioche. This is turning out to be a lunch feast instead of afternoon tea. Well, I am not complaining, I appreciate the huge varieties and selections.

IMG_3955ed

Of course in every buffet spread we must have the dessert section. Perfect to go with a cup of the TWG tea selections is the various of cakes.

IMG_3960ed

IMG_3962ed

There was even a chocolate corner. The chocolate corner has a chocolate fountain for the seasonal fruit skewers and marshmallows, chocolate mousse, Dulcey chocolate brownie, chocolate crunchy hazelnut dome as well as assorted pralines and truffles

IMG_3963ed

The Afternoon Tea buffet is priced at $45 per adult, $22.50 per child which includes two serving of coffee and tea from a selection of premium coffee and TWG tea.

Thai Village Restaurant @ Singapore Indoor Stadium

IMG_3994ed

Thai Village Restaurant which used to be at Kallang Leisure Park has moved to their new premises at Indoor Stadium. The restaurant has taken over the previous location of Mushroom Pot and Le Bistrot. I actually like Thai Village Restaurant's new location at Indoor Stadium. I find it more exclusive with the carpark just right in front of the restaurant. I would like to take this opportunity to correct many like me that thinks that Thai Village is only about shark's fin. Like me I did not not know that Thai Village actually offers Thai-Teochew cuisine in the menu

IMG_4004ed

Started in 1991, Thai Village Restaurant has steadily established itself overseas with restaurants in China, Indonesia and Vietnam. Currently it is left with 3 restaurants in Singapore. Popular for the Shark's Fin Soup back then, business has been affected with global trend to stop eating this delicacy. I am not totally supporting it neither am I against it. For me everything has it's equivalence point, everything has to be balanced. So it is not about stopping totally but finding a sustainable solution.

Baked Crabs with Vermicelli 4/5

It seems like the Baked Crabs with Vermicelli ($36/$54/$72) is another popular dish at Thai Village Restaurant. When I posted the picture on instagram, I have followers commenting that they missed having this dish. Cooked and served using the same pan, the flavours were well absorbed by the vermicelli. No wonder this delicious dish is well received by many. A tip for patrons. The green chilli sauce surprisingly goes very well with the vermicelli.

Baked Thai Style Cod Fish 4.5/5

A must try at Thai Village has to be the Baked Thai Style Cod Fish ($30/$45/$60). Cooked with ginger, garlic, spring onion and even pork to lift the flavours, the fatty cod fish with its buttery taste is further accentuated to a new level of enjoyment.

IMG_4013ed
Abalone Rice 4/5

The Abalone Rice ($33 per servicing) is probably the Chinese version of chirashi with its fragrant rice and sliced abalone from Argentina. I was told that the restaurant has Japanese customer ordering this luxury bowl all for oneself.

IMG_4015ed
Seafood Fried Rice 4/5

For more carbo intake, the Seafood Fried Rice ($16/$24/$32) will delight one with its fragrant grainy rice that comes with prawns, crab meat and crab roe.

IMG_4016ed
Braised Duck Web 4.5/5

I specially requested the Braised Duck Web ($20) since Thai Village claims it is a Thai-Teochew cuisine restaurant. It turned out this is the dish that we enjoyed most. Sucking the skin and collagen off the bones, this is one bonelicious dish.

IMG_4005ed
Wagyu Beef and Mushroom

To cater for a wider audience, like many other Chinese restaurants nowadays, Thai Village also started to offer premium beef on their menu. The Wagyu Beef was cooked to perfection, tender and flavourful. A good alternate to the usual stir fried black pepper or spring onion beef.

IMG_4023ed
Mango Pudding

Moving on to the dessert, the Mango Pudding ($4) is the real stuff. Blended and allow to set using fresh mango, this is served with condensed milk at the side if you like additional sweetness to it.

IMG_4024ed
Double Boiled Hashima

IMG_4019ed
Sea Coconut with Longan

Both the Double Boiled Hashima ($12) and Sea Coconut with Longan ($4) are two refreshing desserts that are perfect for the hot weather and after a chinese meal to wash down all the greasiness, cleansing the palate.

IMG_4025ed
Yam Paste with Ginko Nuts

Yam Paste ($5 per bowl) is classic in Teochew cuisine and yes it is available on Thai Village's menu. This is one of the best yam paste I have tried. It may not be as smooth but I like the fact that each mouthful is packed with the distinctively yam flavour. Add a bit of coconut milk to full enjoy this classic Teochew dish.

IMG_4027ed

To be frank, all these years I did not know that Thai Village Restaurant is a Thai-Teochew cuisine restaurant until my recent visit. The restaurant is not just about the shark's fin. The extensive menu offers an delectable selection of dishes that were all very well executed, at least for those that I tried during my visit. I was convinced by the culinary skill and quality of the kitchen that I have already planned for my next return.

Whale & Cloud (鲸舆雲) @ Niven Road (Selegie)

The words have been out and soon this little hidden cafe at Selegie will no longer be a secret. Whale & Cloud (鲸舆雲) is a cafe located at Niven Road. To be exact, the entrance is at the back of the shop house, access via the back alley. The door is usually locked, so you have to knock on the door. Is she trying to be secretive? Well I felt it is more for safety reason since she runs the place herself and being at the back alley, there is some element of danger.

IMG_4175ed

The lady owner has rented the backyard of the office and converted it into a small cafe which only opens during weekend when she is free from her sales and marketing job in a technology start up company. In fact the front of the cafe is the office where she holds her day job.

IMG_4167ed

The sight of the unfinished red wall, potted plants hanging down from the ceiling and a platoon of Bearbricks toy collection welcome me when I stepped into the little cafe. This place is so beautiful. It felt like I have been transformed into her own little wonderland.

IMG_4169ed

The lovely cafe is really small with 2 small tables and a row of old Cathay cinema chairs. The little cafe probably can sit about 12 people at max. The center of the cafe is where the daily freshly bakes are being displayed.

IMG_4176ed

There is something about this cafe that makes you feel at ease and in a way forget about the world beyond the blue metal door. Time and pace seems to slow down in the small little space. The soft spoken and gracious lady owner goes about asking the customers what she can get for them and offering her fresh bakes. The whole atmosphere and ambience felt as if I am at home or visiting a friend's kitchen.

IMG_4172d

Currently the coffee at Whale & Cloud is served in paper cups. The lady owner shared with me that she is currently using Omotesando Koffee beans from Japan. These beans are brought during her recent Japan trip. The coffee beans used at the cafe will depends on her oversea trip, so do look forward to sample different type of coffee beans from various part of the world when she returns from her next trip. A little cup of old school biscuits will be also served together with the coffee.

IMG_4184ed
Carrot Cake 4/5

Actually I came from a lunch tasting so I was actually quite full but when the owner offered me a slice of the homemade carrot cake to try, I simply could not reject her. I like the fact that the carrot cake is dense, moist, nutty and mildly spiced. I am not a big fan of cinnamon hence I enjoyed this version at Whale & Cloud. In fact I finished the whole slice.

IMG_4180ed

Whale & Cloud operates on a trust concept. There is no menu or price for their offerings. You simply pay what you want before leaving.

IMG_4181ed

If you wish to check out this little secret cafe in Selegie, please follow them on instagram @whalencloud as their operating hours are irregular and only open on weekends.
